By W. L. Williams.' ; tightly bound; few interior pages are age darkened with foxing most are fairly bright and clean but for some pencil marginalia; all text is easily legible; all leaves remain supple. Consists of 4 page narrative about captivity by Indians and white man William Wallace's exposure to Indian remedies; remaining 12 pages are ads for 'Brant's Indian Pulmonary Balsam' and 'Brant's Indian Purifying Extract' which cure scrofula fevers liver complaints abscesses consumption piles mercurial diseases female complaints etc. Not dated but some advert testimonials are dated 1844 - 1849 and pencil note in a margin is dated 1850. 8vo 16 pp; illustrated adverts. The Prayer Book is unpaginated but collates pi1; A16-O16. Hymnal pp. xv ibl 681 1. Bound by "Watson Binder Marylebone" signed at foot of front pastedown in beige cloth decorated with inlaid silver quatrefoil and flower motifs. Calf turn-ins tooled in gilt. Silk endpapers. Gauffred edges. Two silver pillar and heart-shaped silver clasps one engraved with the letters "I.J" and the other with the date "1760". Both have the silver mark "IL". Most of the silver decorative inlay has worn off as has some of the calf on the turn-ins but otherwise the binding is in very good condition. Edward Watson worked at 239 Marylebone Road in the late nineteenth century. His work was exhibited at the first Arts and Crafts Exhibition Society in 1888 where he showed "five specimens of book-binding in hand-coloured calf: antique style and finish". There is no date on this lovely Prayer Book and Hymnal binding but it has the air of the Arts and Crafts Movement with its decorative flair and repurposed Georgian silver clasps. Spottiswoode 1855. 121 x 78 mm. 5 x 3". 532 leaves. <br/> Attractive contemporary dark purple velvet covers edged in brass brass corner pieces upper cover with a central brass "IHC" Christogram smooth spine brass clasp all edges gilt white silk endleaves. Housed in a probably contemporary black pebble-grain morocco case with brass clasp lined with white silk a little wear to case silk a little discolored in places. Front endleaf with a gilt gift inscription: "Presented to Jessie Cooper / from her affectionate Uncle / Alfred John Tubb. / Oct. 29. 1856." Verso of front free endpaper with the book label of Anthony David Estill. Velvet ever so slightly worn miniscule separation at top and bottom of joints a couple of pages with short marginal tears or nipped corners but very close to pristine condition.<br/> <br/> This is an unusually well-preserved example of a Victorian gift binding little changed since the day it left the bindery. Judging from the charming gilt inscription on the silk endleaf stating that it was a present from an "affectionate uncle" to his niece it seems likely that the book was intended as a gift in honor of the girl's confirmation. The luxurious purple velvet delicate brass fittings and bright gilt edges connote treasure and opulence and it is clear the that the young female recipient--and generations of later owners--took scrupulous care of it over the years. Velvet can be worn down quite easily but here it remains fresh and richly colored having been carefully stored away in its custom-made protective leather case. Printed by G. E. Eyre and W. 'A scene connected with the Wesleyan Missionary Society and the Maories sic. Mr Waterhouse general superintendent of that Society's Missions in Australia and Polynesia is seen introducing to the natives Mr Creed their new missionary and his wife. The detail is wonderful and the colouring beautiful . The missionary ship in the bay is the "Triton". Mr Waterhouse died at Hobart in 1842' Courtney T. Issued four years after the Society's founding in 1831 under the leadership of William Lloyd Garrison editor of The Liberator the report documents the transition from localized reform efforts to a coordinated national campaign through affiliated societies. The text situates abolition as a moral and political imperative asserting the rapid growth of antislavery sentiment and anticipating legislative abolition.<br /> <br /> Garrison and Knapp. Third Annual Report of the Board of Managers of the New England Anti Slavery Society.
