'A scene connected with the Wesleyan Missionary Society and the Maories sic. Mr Waterhouse general superintendent of that Society's Missions in Australia and Polynesia is seen introducing to the natives Mr Creed their new missionary and his wife. The detail is wonderful and the colouring beautiful . The missionary ship in the bay is the "Triton". Mr Waterhouse died at Hobart in 1842' Courtney T. Third Annual Report of the Board of Managers of the New England Anti Slavery Society 1835 an early institutional document of organized abolitionism that records the structure leadership and expanding influence of the New England Anti Slavery Society during a formative stage of the movement. Issued four years after the Society's founding in 1831 under the leadership of William Lloyd Garrison editor of The Liberator the report documents the transition from localized reform efforts to a coordinated national campaign through affiliated societies. The text situates abolition as a moral and political imperative asserting the rapid growth of antislavery sentiment and anticipating legislative abolition.<br /> <br /> Garrison and Knapp. Third Annual Report of the Board of Managers of the New England Anti Slavery Society. Boston: Garrison and Knapp 1835. First edition. Pamphlet. The report includes the Society's constitution lists of officers detailed subscription and donation records and a treasurer's report alongside rosters of life and honorary members. Named figures include William Lloyd Garrison Moses Brown Thomas Clarkson Josiah Wedgwood and William Wilberforce linking American abolitionist organizing to transatlantic reform networks. The closing statement declares "Thousands and tens of thousands of conscientious persons are already beginning to look upon slaveholding in its true light as an atrocious crime. it will have been abolished by the State legislatures" expressing confidence in the accelerating spread of antislavery conviction.<br /> <br /> Published in 1835 the same year the New England Anti Slavery Society reorganized into the Massachusetts Anti Slavery Society the report documents a critical moment of institutional consolidation and expansion within the abolitionist movement. The inclusion of financial records and membership lists provides evidence of the material and social networks sustaining reform while the ideological language reflects the shift toward immediatism that defined Garrisonian abolitionism. Stitched. 36pp. Title page and text illustrations. Lightly foxed. Very Good. <br/><br/> A scarce Almanac also appearing with a publication date of 1840. The Almanac is noteworthy for its excellent content on the Amistad incident including portraits of Cinque and others. <br/> "Things for Abolitionists to Do" recommends working to establish schools for free children of color. Also included are "Hints to Anti-Slavery Debaters;" an "Ecclesiastical Roll of Infamy" listing northern clergy of the Methodist Episcopal Church who voted for a resolution prohibiting "colored persons to give testimony against white persons;" and a "Congressional Roll of Infamy" of Northern congressmen who voted for the Gag Rule prohibiting Congress from entertaining petitions to abolish slavery in Washington D.C. As to the presidential campaign the authors say "President Van Buren and General Harrison have both publicly taken the side of the oppressor against the oppressed and the God of the oppressed. John Reeves had been appointed king's printer in 1800 and edited his own version of the BCP of which this is the second edition; the separate title-page following the preliminary matter is dated 1801. That preliminary matter offering historical and liturgical commentary is extensive and interesting.<br>Â Â Â Â Fore-edge: This beautiful example bears a subtly shaded => fore-edge painting showing Westminster Abbey in the background behind a waterfront view with sailboats.<br>Â Â Â Â Binding: Full straight-grain dark olive green morocco covers framed in elegant feather and pearl twist gilt roll turn-ins with floral gilt roll. Stone-pattern marbled endpapers. All edges gilt. <br>Â Â Â Â <br>Â Â Â Â Griffiths Bibliography of the Book of Common Prayer 1802/1. François-Pierre-Guillaume Guizot fut un homme politique et un historien français de la première moitié du XIXème siècle. Il se fit remarquer par Châteaubriand en 1805 et fut nommé ministre de l'Intérieur en 1830; en 1832 ministre de l'Instruction publique, mais il s'opposa à Thiers. Partisan du suffrage censitaire, Guizot fut néanmoins l'inventeur de la lutte des classes. Il termina sa vie, exilé en Angleterre, à rédiger ses livres d'histoire. Nombreuses illustrations d'artistes de l'époque aussi bien en hors-texte qu'en vignettes. Bon état.

Seine Sammlung umfasste neben vielen anderen bibliophilen Kostbarkeiten auch zwei Exemplare der Gutenberg- oder Mazarine-Bibel (Los 436, ein Exemplar auf Pergament gedruckt), eine Biblia-Pauperum (Los 419) und die frühesten Ausgaben der ersten englischen Schriftsteller. Als die Familie zunehmend unter finanziellem Druck geriet, bot sie an, die Bibliothek einschließlich der Sammlung von illuminierten Manuskripten in den 1890er Jahren für 160.000 Pfund an die Nation zu verkaufen. Der Deal wurde nicht abgeschlossen, und die Bücher wurden in den nächsten Jahren stückweise für insgesamt 228.000 Pfund verkauft. Viele wurden von der British Library erworben. - ?Friends of Mr. Morris will always regret that no catalogue of his complete library was ever issued, as it would have illustrated, in a remarkable manner, the real genius in selection which enabled him, in a very short space of time, to bring together so many specimens of first-rate importance? (The Guardian, 14 December 1898, p. 26).
