First edition first or early printing without "price" on front panel and with advertisement for "History of the Supreme Court of the United States by Gustavus Myers" on rear panel. Short story first published in INTERNATIONAL SOCIALIST REVIEW January 1909 later collected in THE STRENGTH OF THE STRONG 1914. ". a fine science fiction story as well as revolutionary tract in which for once London used an orthodox Marxist analysis to draw a picture of the future -- a future that is not merely a projection of tendencies already present in his day but is instead the outcome of as-yet-invisible forces that are the dialectical antithesis of the ones determining the reader's familiar existence. It is excellent science fiction that explores the social and human impact of a great scientific innovation the development of proletarian class consciousness. As a work of propaganda it is one the socialist propagandists have never tired of reading for it describes the future as the outcome of that very transformation of consciousness that is the goal of the revolutionary agitator" - Richard Gid Powers. "The Black Cat" was a periodical headed by Umbstaetter to which unknown writers were invited to submit anonymous stories. To quote from Jack London's Introduction: He H.D. Umbstaetter made me possible. He saved my literary life if he did not save my literal life. And I think he was guilty of the second crime too. I had been attempting to write something marketable. Everything I possessed was in pawn and I did not have enough to eat. I was sick mentally and physically from lack of nourishment. I was at the end of my tether beaten out starved ready to go back to coal-shoveling or ahead to suicide. 1757263153London: The London Magazine 1757. unbound. Miniature map. Uncolored engraving. Image measures 4.75" x 6.75".

This unusual plan of Prague was published by The London Magazine just a few months following the 1757 Battle of Prague. Oriented with north facing left it depicts the position of the two armies with a key in the bottom margin locating the positions of the artillery reserves batteries and mortars of the Prussian Army on the map. The Battle of Prague part of the Seven Years' War was fought between the Prussians and the Austrians for control of Prague and its surroundings. Although Frederick The Great from Prussia eventually succeeded in forcing the Austrians to retreat he was unable to take the city due to the heavy losses. A beautiful title cartouche adorns the bottom right corner. Most likely engraved by Thomas Kitchin. The map is in very good condition with narrow bottom margin. "The London Magazine or Gentleman%u2019s Monthly Intelligencer" was founded in 1732 as a rival to the popular Gentleman's Magazine. It is England's oldest cultural and literary journal.
