He was also a noted collector of antique books and nowadays there is a great deal of artistic appreciation directed towards his personal bookplate. It was illustrated by F.C. Papé as a tribute to Wheatley's mentor Gordon Eric Gordon-Tombe; in his design Gordon Eric is depicted as a satyr seated on a stump beside a bottle of champagne and a saxophone as he delivers some words of wisdom to a young man based on Wheatley himself.
