The lead essay "Revolution" outlines how and why London renounced capitalism as a failed social system and declared himself an active participant in the "socialist revolution" the last essay is an autobiographical piece and the essays in between are on diverse subjects. A few of the "essays" are actually humorous short fiction stories; others are serious sometimes angry rants against capitalistic greed and political corruption. All of the pieces are thought-provoking and excellently written though only loosely intellectual highly opinionated and rife with contradiction as was London himself.

Condition:

Corners gently bumped spine ends and corners moderately rubbed previous owner's name on front end paper. 1905128821905. New York: The Macmillan Company 1905. 3 pp undated ads. Original maroon cloth. First Edition which consisted of only 2530 copies -- fewer copies than any known printing of all earlier Jack London books except his first book THE SON OF THE WOLF 2028 copies. By contrast THE CALL OF THE WILD consisted of 71584 copies and THE SEA-WOLF consisted of 63337 copies. The book consists of seven essays on socialism. Much of the content derived from London's earlier trip to Europe after hanging around the London slums London had sallied off to Paris and Rome where he hobnobbed with the socialists in each city. To quote from London's preface: It is the hope of the writer that the socialistic studies in this volume may in some slight degree enlighten a few capitalistic minds. The capitalist must learn first and for always that socialism is based not upon the equality but upon the inequality of men. This is a near-fine copy slightly faded on the spine as usual but otherwise just a little rubbing at the very tips. Quite an uncommon London title. 1913126841913. New York: The Century Company 1913. 1 page undated ads. Original blue-grey cloth decorated in black. First Edition of this collection of ten short stories. In addition to the title story the volume includes "The Madness of John Harned" "Bunches of Knuckles" and "To Kill a Man." This was the second of four books in a row published by Century after Jack had strayed from Macmillan on his trip to New York a year earlier. He had business in New York with the Millergraph investment he had bought into the invention of a new lithographic process which promptly went awry and he took Charmian there in the winter of 1911. It was the worst time of her marriage. He abandoned her most of the time in an apartment on Morningside Heights while he roistered night and day round the city with. a pack of friends. He stopped writing and drank heavily unable to resist the lure of being a literary lion. He went to boxing matches he spent the nights on Broadway or with chorus girls. Sinclair It was in this frame of mind that Jack marched into Macmillan and demanded that his royalty be increased from 15% to 20% -- and wound up with Century instead. This copy is in the primary binding lettering in gilt with totem poles in black; it has only one blank leaf at the rear other than the endpaper which is "presumed" by bibliographers to indicate the first state. It is an unusually bright copy fine except for minor natural wrinkling of the spine cloth; this is a Decorative Designers binding. Sisson & Martens p. 68; Blanck 11942.

hardcover books

1912126831912. Illustrated by P. J. Monahan. New York: The Century Co 1912. Original blue-grey cloth pictorially decorated in black and cream. First Edition of this loosely-connected series of tales about a tenderfoot journalist who goes to the Klondike in search of gold and in his efforts to prove himself to the girl he loves undergoes a series of dangerous adventures. There was a humanity and a relaxation in his Smoke Bellew stories and they sold well in book form. Gone was the myth of Alaska the sense of a superman pitting himself against necessity and the unknown. The deeds of daring of the hero from Harvard were often tongue-in-cheek more Twain than Melville. Sinclair SMOKE BELLEW was the first book published after his string of titles based upon the Pacific voyage of the "Snark"; he wrote this thereafter while he and Charmian were settled into their "Beauty Ranch." Jack was still recovering from some of the diseases he had incurred on the trip and was increasingly relying upon alcohol to assist him. SMOKE BELLEW was also the first of several London titles published by Century: along with his drinking he was developing a sense of suspiciousness and superiority which led him to mistrust Macmillan and seek out another publisher -- a decision he quickly regretted since Century would prove to have much less patience or understanding with him. This is a handsome nearly fine copy just a hint of cover soil but essentially no wear; atypically the cream-colored moon on the front cover is quite bright and unrubbed. The pictorial cover is by Decorative Designers. Sisson & Martens p. 66; Blanck 11939.

hardcover books

1914137941914. With Frontispiece. New York: The Macmillan Company 1914. 6 pp undated ads. Original light blue cloth decorated in gilt. First Edition of this collection of seven socialistic tales. Two of them "The Dream of Debs" and "South of the Slot" he had written years earlier just after the San Francisco earthquake. In the former which was later published as a separate pamphlet San Francisco is destroyed by another form of catastrophe a nationwide general strike. The wealthy narrator wakes up with the premonition of an earthquake to come. Yet there is only silence the silence of nobody going to work. Slowly the city breaks down. Violence flares between the slum people and the upper classes. Sinclair In the title story London mocks his old god Kipling whom his earliest Alaskan tales emulated: primitive men choose brotherhood over capitalism rejecting the lies of their "Lip-King." Macmillan produced only 3948 copies of this book -- which with the exception of London's plays and his few nonfiction titles is one of the smallest number of copies of all his works -- fewer than THE SCARLET PLAGUE fewer than THE HOUSE OF PRIDE fewer than SOUTH SEA TALES fewer than THE PEOPLE OF THE ABYSS. Not only were a small number printed but the binding was unfortunately lettered in white -- which typically is found quite eroded today. This however is a fine copy with none of the white eroded cloth very slightly dusty. Quite uncommon in this condition. Sisson & Martens p. 76; Blanck 11955.

hardcover books
