1831177610London: J. Catnach printer 1831. Pomp and ceremony at the new London Bridge First edition of this rare broadside celebrating the opening of the new London Bridge and the Royal flotilla that passed underneath. The illustration captures the scene: there are waving crowds and flags flying a hot-air balloon is in the air and there are many barges including at the centre the barge with the royal couple. The text gives an account of the arrangements followed by two songs: "the landing of royal William and Adelaide at London Bridge" and "New London Bridge and King William for ever". The bridge constructed from 1824 to 1831 replaced the medieval structure. It was famously sold in 1968 and rebuilt in Lake Havasu Arizona. We trace three copies in institutions: National Library of Scotland the V&A Museum and the Science Museum in London. Illustrated broadside 495 x 372 mm text in 4 columns within woodcut fern border. Mounted on Japanese tissue slight wear at extremities and a few creases and tiny chips with minor loss a little toned and spotted. In good condition. unknown
19348377London: Waterlow and Sons 1934. Quad royal station wall map 101 x 26 cms 40 x 50 inches printed in colours trivial wear at fold intersections and short split along one fold blank verso. The map attempts full integration of bus and coach routes tramways the Underground and main-line railways and is possibly the first issue showing the whole operating area of the recently formed London Passenger Transport Board already re-branded as London Transport. Examples would have been posted at selected bus and Underground stations enquiry offices and similar venues. The legend bottom left explains how the map has been distorted to allow for greater detail in the central area: the oval curves actually represent circles equidistant from Charing Cross. As well as public transport prominence is given to relatively new form of private travel by air. About a dozen areodromes RAF and civil had already sprung up within the LPTB area. Some such as RAF Biggin Hill would shortly find fame during the Battle of Britain. Others such as the small commercial fields at Heathrow and Gatwick and this must be one of the very first maps to show the latter would become the huge international hubs we know today. At the time the map was made Croydon boasted Britains major international airport. Map Waterlow and Sons unknown
1859141030London: The London Printing and Publishing Company Limited. c.1859-61. Doorstepping the Indian Rebellion A fascinating and notable piece of 19th-century publishing history: a pair of publisher's blads in this case used by a salesman in the garnering of subscriptions for two very popular and topical part-works Robert Montgomery Martin's The Indian Empire 1858-59 and Charles Ball's The Indian Mutiny 1858-61; each gilt stamped on the front cover "Specimen. Not for Sale" and carrying at the end a number of pages for recording subscribers' details. The blad for The Indian Mutiny shows that our salesman was on the East Midlands circuit with the names of two individuals recorded in Radford and Nottingham: a Thomas Brown and a Joseph Houlton baker of Derby Road Nottingham the latter recorded in directories of the period. A blad is a sample book section used by publishers and their representatives for promotional purposes. These are particularly handsome examples presented in their now slightly faded but nonetheless impressive cloth bindings that alone would have been a temptation to the potential book buyer offering a choice selection of plates and the opening six or eight pages of text. Needless to say their highly ephemeral nature makes them decidedly uncommon. Two works large octavo. Each with steel-engraved frontispiece and vignette title page first work with 11 plates second with 8 both with hand-coloured engraved map of India and specimen of letterpress. Martin: original saffron morocco-grain cloth blind ornamental foliate paneling to covers title within a pictorial cartouche gilt to front cover pale primrose yellow-coated endpapers; Ball: original red bead-grain cloth blind ornamental paneling to covers title within pictorial cartouche gilt incorporating a portrait of Sir Henry Havelock to front cover pale primrose yellow-coated endpapers Bindings a little rubbed and stained inner hinges cracked back cover of The Indian Mutiny loose and holding on front cords yet considering the nature of these pieces remarkably well preserved. hardcover

1910100973
Sonoma County December 22 1910. 1910. Very good. - Typed letter signed by Jack London. More than 200 words typed on his 11 inch high by 8-1/2 inch personalized "Saxon Bond" watermarked paper with his stamp in the top left corner "Jack London / Glen Ellen / Sonoma Co. Cal.". Jack London writes to his friend fellow Socialist H.C. Tuck proposing a future lecture in defense of Socialism. His Socialist themed short story "The Strength of the Strong" is about to be published in Harper's Magazine. The story London writes is "a reply" to "Kipling's attack in parable upon Socialism. The Bee-Hive parable". He suggests that he can read his story "at Dietz Opera House and throw myself open to questions afterwards. This could make an evening". He says that his preference would be to hold the event on Sunday January 1st. "Of course and as a matter of course there will be no charges on my part." Signed boldly in a large hand "Jack London". There are very short tears to the edges of a few folds one of which has been reinforced with clear archival document tape. There are a couple of tiny faint holes at the intersection of the folds. Very good.

1910 was a significant year for Jack London 1876-1916. In 1910 he began work on his mansion on his ranch called the Wolf House. The house was destroyed by fire in 1913. Jack London's daughter Joy was born to him and his second wife Charmian London on June 19 1910. Tragically the infant died only 38 hours later due to birth complications. His novel "Burning Daylight" was published in that year.

H.C. Tuck was the editor of "The World" which was owned and published by the Oakland California branch of the Socialist Party. In September 1911 he was jailed for allegedly libeling the Oakland police chief by suggesting he was responsible for the killing of a young girl while she was in prison. A demonstration was held in support of Tuck.
Sonoma County, December 22, 1910.
