With printed list of prices and buyers' names. Scarce Sotheby's sale catalogue in which is described "a selected portion of the valuable library at Patshull House Woverhampton the property of the Rt. Honble. the Earl of Dartmouth G.C.V.O. including: an exceedingly important collection of sixteenth century maps of Ireland important early manuscript maps of Bermuda Dublin England the Phillipine Islands and Tangier. The Bermuda map almost certainly created in 1609 by Sir George Somers is justifiably considered to THE EARLIEST SURVIVING MAP OF BERMUDA see below. The catalogue also describes important manuscripts relating to the American War of Independence; colour plate books the property of the late Sir Mayson M. Beeton K.B.E.; manuscript charts by Nicholas Comberford the property of Mrs. M.E. Luard Upper Court Kermerton near Tewkesbury; Robert Havell's extremely rare collection of the Birds of Paradise the property of Major J.R. Abbey; Keat's sonnet 'Happy is England! I could be content' in his own handwriting; formerly in the possession of W.C. Hazlitt the property of Albert Wright Esq."<br/><br/>Additionally the sale offered an exceedingly important collection of 16th century manuscript maps of IRELAND namely 27 maps or diagrams relating to nation including a map of Donegal Bay and part of Fermanagh by Baptista Boazio -- a map of supreme importance for Irish history. Only two other manuscript maps of Ireland by Boazio are known. <br/><br/>¶ Concerning the Bermuda map: "One of the most exciting finds of the mid-20th century was the reappearance in the public domain of the MS map made by Admiral Sir George Somers when shipwrecked on the uninhabited Bermudas and despatched in 1610 to the Adventurers in England with a 3000-word description of the Islands bv Secretary-Elect to Virginia William Strachey. His letter addressed "Excellent Lady" probably to Lucy Harington Countess of Bedford an outstanding shareholder was published in 1625 by Durchas who lamented marginally "the map we have not." In 1948 it turned up in the ancestral collection of the Earls of Dartmouth i.e. THE PRESENT CATALOGUE and was acquired for Bermuda. Some names subsequent to 1609 have evidently been added and the arms of Harington appear in the lower margin. Obviously this map predates Richard Norwood's engraved map of 1622 and his two famous surveys on which all subsequent maps were based up to the 20th century."SOURCE: Terry Tucker Bermuda Historian referenced in Bermuda Stamps online. 1915136681915. Illustrated by Gordon Grant. New York: The Macmillan Company 1915. 6 pp undated ads. Original maroon cloth decorated in orange and yellow. First Edition of this unusual tale actually written some time earlier at about the same time as SMOKE BELLEW and THE NIGHT-BORN. He had just abandoned a book he called THE ASSASSINATION BUREAU as he was interrupted by the death of their newborn baby and he never returned to it. He then turned to THE SCARLET PLAGUE -- a haunting futuristic novel about the end of the world with San Francisco reduced to an archaeological site beside which an old man tells a group of young savages about the breakdown of society after the attack of an incurable plague. In one graceful reference Jack acknowledged his debt to Poe saying that some called the plague "The Red Death". Almost casually THE SCARLET PLAGUE ends in a hope of horses with a beautiful stallion and a small herd standing on the wild beach in the sunset. Sinclair This was at the time Jack and Charmian had renounced the big city one recently reduced to an archaeological site though by an earthquake in favor of their horse ranch in the Sonoma Valley. His love of horses was a major theme in another novel of the same period THE VALLEY OF THE MOON. Macmillan produced just over 5000 copies of this book relatively few for London's titles; it has become a rather scarce book vigilantly hunted by fantasy / science fiction collectors. This copy is very good-plus a touch of wear at the head of the spine but less fading of the spine than is usual for this maroon cloth . Sisson & Martens p. 80; Blanck 11960. unknown books

18306501London: Dobbs of London 1830. Single sheet of stiff card hand-cut oblong oval 11 x 14 cm. embossed with the publisher's name on the lower left. A superb late Georgian embossed paper pheasant with hand painted watercolor detailing. This beautiful embossed paper pheasant was produced plain in the 1820-30 period by Dobbs of London who were a firm of embossers print publishers and "ornamental stationers to the King". The Regency period saw the introduction of the technique of embossing and it quickly became a very popular form of decoration. Dobbs were known for their use of embossed paper/card designs used in face screens mourning cards writing papers visiting cards and envelopes adapted to all the purposes of fashionable correspondence drawing writing and wrapping papers etc. Painting and drawing were very popular pastimes in the late 18th and 19th centuries. The plain high relief/ embossed card was purchased from a stationer and the artist then set to work bringing the pheasant to life by the use of watercolor. Early dealer's pencil note. Hand-cut into an oval not effecting text or image. Very good. Dobbs of London unknown books
