An attractive collection of 25 published albumen photographs of London photographed and published by the London Stereoscope company. Original red cloth with gilt titles to the front board. There is some bumping and water staining to the front board particularly. The title page and some page edges are a little foxed but the images themselves are in very good condition. The pages are each bound in album style. This is weak in parts and has been reinforced but overall is sound. images are 13.5 x 21 cm each. The usual London landmarks are all represented on streets which seem very empty to the modern eye and populated by pedestrians horses and carriages. Album is 300 by 220mm 11¾ by 8¾ inches. . He was accorded responsibility for rebuilding 52 churches in the City of London after the Great Fire in 1666 including St Stephens Walbrook and - what is regarded as his masterpiece - St Paul's Cathedral on Ludgate Hill completed in 1710. These are included in this beautiful collection. George Rennie provides scientific and historical notices of the two bridges practical observations of the tides of the River Thames and a concise essay on bridges from the earliest period &c. &c. The plates depict the old London Bridge before and during the demolition process and the new London Bridge during and after its erection which happened alongside.
