Comite Digbaeo nec non D.D. Papinio & Mohyo positis. The first work includes contributions by several authors among them Kenelm Digby. "Digby set himself the task of examining on mechanical principles the concepts of current Paracelsian chemistry especially alchemy and the 'universal spirit' giving life to all things. In Paris he studied chemistry under the Scottish royal physician William Davidson. John Evelyn visited Digby at his laboratory on 7 November 1651 and was given his 'powder with which he affirmed that he had fixed mercury before the late King' and 'a dissolvent of calx of gold' Evelyn Diary 3.20 48. Digby's experiments often involved faulty observation and conclusions that went further than the facts allowed. A prime example was the celebrated 'sympathetic powder'. Made from dried green vitriol this was a variant of the well-known Paracelsian 'weapon salve' which cured wounds by being applied not to the patient but to the offending weapon. Finely rebound in full polished calf some foxing and discoloration to title along with an old owner's mark title trimmed a little close at bottom scattered light foxing; a nice clean copy overall. The best Latin edition with the added material by Papin and Mohyus 8 722 42pp.

Digby was a renowned world traveler who supposedly spoke 10 or 12 languages - he collected recipes and scientific discoveries to bring back to England. The basis of this work is an extension of a speech he gave in Montpelier a few years previous on the Powder of Sympathy where an element of the weapon was treated in order to cure the wound it caused - usually by removing the bandage from a musket wound treating the bandage with the powder and thereby curing the wound. The theory was remarkable for its high levels of both nonsense and popularity. Hudibras mocked the idea in the following year and a 1687 joke version had it performed at a set time on a ship born dog in order to determine longitude. Size: Quarto 4to. Quantity Available: 1. Quarter black leather cloth covered boards leather spine with raised bands tooled with gilt in six compartments with "Dances" in gilt at the top of the spine the initials "N.L.D" in gilt on the front board and blue endpapers. Worn boards and spine with the foot of the spine coming loose both the front and rear hinge have been repaired some loss of the front fly leaf toned endpapers and a few tears throughout but there is no loss of the sheet music which remains bright and clean a few with an owner name or music shop stamp on the front cover and one song may possibly have the wrong cover "Lachtaubchen: La Rieuse" overall very good.

The album consists of 30 instrumental dance pieces for the piano many being schottisches and lancers. The collection includes many seemingly uncommon to rare pieces which are either unrecorded by OCLC or located in very small numbers and almost every piece is bound with its original front cover some include rear covers featuring ads as well. Van-Loan & Co. copyright 1890 unrecorded by OCLC.

And what appears to be an early edition of "Künstler-Quadrille" by Johann Strauss with dampstaining along the top throughout published by Carl Haslinger no printed copyright the text is in German so it's difficult to make out if this is the exact piece by Strauss or an interpretation of his work.

The album also includes multiple pieces by the composers George Wiegand and Emil Waldteufel.

A lovely collection of uncommon to rare late 19th century dance music. Because of the present work Strauss is today regarded a pioneer in the historical investigation of Jesus.
