62933Marées-Gesellschaft 1922. LIMITED EDITION 42/80. Folio 40 x 30 cm. 20 original mounted colour-lithographs loose as issued in publisher's drab cloth-backed portfolio each illustration signed in pencil and with blindstamp of the Marées Society to lower margin. Housed in original slipcase worn. Portfolio lightly soiled slipcase worn lithographs well preserved a very good copy overall. Print XXXIX of the Marées Society. The Marées Society was a bibliophilic and art society founded in 1917 as a collaboration between influential art historian and critic Julius Meier-Graefe and avant-garde publisher Reinhard Piper named after the now largely forgotten German realist painter Hans von Marées 1837–1887 whom Meier-Graefe revered. As a special imprint of Piper they issued lavishly produced illustrated books and portfolios reflecting Meier-Graefe's taste which was rooted in a love for French Impressionism and literary classics. Major portfolios included Max Beckmann's Faces 1919 and Annual Fair 1922 and Lovis Corinth's Classical Legends 1919 as well as the group portfolios Shakespeare Visions 1918 with thirty-two prints by various artists including Beckmann Corinth and Oskar Kokoschka and Rembrandt: Religious Legends 1920 with prints by Beckmann and others. Between 1919 and 1925 the society issued five volumes of the yearbook Ganymed named after von Marées's last painting The Abduction of Ganymede 1887 with features on art music and literature as well as original prints by various artists. The society folded in 1929 and Meier-Graefe who left Germany for France in 1930 was later denigrated by the Nazis for promoting "degenerate art." Ariadne auf Naxos Ariadne on Naxos Op. 60 is a 1912 opera by Richard Strauss with a German libretto by Hugo von Hofmannsthal. Marées-Gesellschaft, 1922. hardcover

The basis of this work is an extension of a speech he gave in Montpelier a few years previous on the Powder of Sympathy where an element of the weapon was treated in order to cure the wound it caused - usually by removing the bandage from a musket wound treating the bandage with the powder and thereby curing the wound. The theory was remarkable for its high levels of both nonsense and popularity. Hudibras mocked the idea in the following year and a 1687 joke version had it performed at a set time on a ship born dog in order to determine longitude. Size: Quarto 4to. Quantity Available: 1. A Jewish refugee from Nazi Germany Strauss had a 2-year layover in England before emigrating to the United States in 1937. While on a temporary appointment at Cambridge Hobbes delved into a deep study of the Genesis of Hobbes's thought. 'A student of the history of Jewish thought from Maimonides to Moses Mendelssohn he was naturally led to deal with the thought of Spinoza; and the chief work which he has hitherto published is a work on Spinoza's methods of biblical criticism. From Spinoza he was naturally and logically drawn to Hobbes. There was not only a parallel between the attitude of Spinoza to tradition and that of Hobbes: there was also the fact that Spinoza had used if he had not entirely adopted the moral and political philosophy of Hobbes. Turning accordingly to the study of the writings of Hobbes Dr. Strauss came to England and examined the Hobbes papers in the library of the Duke of Devonshire at Chatsworth. This set him thinking about the early thought of Hobbes; and that in turn led him to embark on a study of the genesis and development of Hobbes's moral and political thought. The result is the present volume.' From the introduction by Ernest Baker. Oxford at the Clarendon Press hardcover
