br. Il volume nasce dalla rielaborazione di un ciclo conferenze tenute presso il Teatro Massimo di Palermo e di due corsi universitari entrambi dedicati al Ring. Vi si trova una guida completa e aggiornata al sistema drammaturgico-musicale wagneriano, alla sua ricchezza concettuale e ai presupposti estetici, filosofici e politici che ne furono alla base. È costituito da un'ampia introduzione dedicata alle suddette premesse (con numerose citazioni dagli scritti di Wagner), seguita da un 'racconto' dettagliato delle vicende - innanzi tutto - dei quattro drammi musicali, in altrettanti capitoli. La trattazione si avvale degli apporti ermeneutici più significativi, da quelli storici di Nietzsche, George Bernard Shaw, Thomas Mann, T. W. Adorno a quelli più recenti. Corredata degli esempi musicali relativi a tutti i Leitmotive e di tavole che offrono una visione d'insieme della struttura tematica, offre la possibilità di addentrarsi nell'universo sonoro e drammaturgico di una delle più grandi creazioni di tutti i tempi per osservarne i dettagli compositivi e districarne la complessità dei significati. Il taglio non è tuttavia analiticamente specialistico: l'origine stessa del volume, didattica e divulgativa, si riflette nell'adozione di un registro intermedio, che non trascura le annotazioni utili allo studioso più competente, ma si presenta al contempo accessibile al lettore colto e appassionato.
