Very Good. 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall. xii 502 pp. Full and rich history of Ariccia and surrounding towns on the outskirts of Rome to the Southeast of the City by Castel Gandolfo the Papal Summer Residence. Ariccia is one of the most ancient cities in Italy dating to at least the ninth century B.C. This history concentrates mostly on the seventeenth and eighteenth century when it was ruled by the powerful Savelli Chigi family which produced one pope Alexander VII and built a grand residence in the town that has been used many a time as a movie set such as in Visconti's "Il Gattopardo" "The Leopard". While it is over two millenia since the town yielded to Rome's preeminence as a city Ariccia continued to be the next most important city in Lazio for long stretches of history owing to its propitious location on the Via Appia the first way station on the road between Rome and Naples and its pleasant salubrious climate in contrast to malalial Rome made it a favored resort for the powerful of Rome in prior centuries. This copy of the history a model of municipal histories in its day is very good. There is some light and occasional foxing yet little that could be considered disconcerting. The exception would be the four places where a prior owner presses leaves which left a residue and in one instance may have created a tiny wormhole type of hole. However the small amount of loss has no effect on readability where it occurred. The vellum has an attractive mottled almost tiger striped design. Book is tight. Occasional light pencil notes a word or two in each case affecting a handful of pages. Still a very good copy. Presso I Lazzarini hardcover

Per Western Wikipedai Turkish Wikipedia Views Him Very Diferently Altug Taner Akçam Born 1953 Is A Turkish-German Historian And Sociologist. During The 1990S He Was The First Turkish Scholar To Acknowledge The Armenian Genocide And Has Written Several Books On The Genocide Such As A Shameful Act 1999 From Empire To Republic: Turkish Nationalism And The Armenian Genocide 2004 The Young Turks' Crime Against Humanity 2012 And Killing Orders 2018. He Is Recognized As A "Leading International Authority" On The Subject. Akçam's Frequent Participation In Public Debates On The Legacy Of The Genocide Have Been Compared To Theodor Adorno's Role In Postwar Germany. Akçam Argues For An Attempt To Reconcile The Differing Armenian And Turkish Narratives Of The Genocide And To Move Away From The Behaviour Which Uses Those Narratives To Support National Stereotypes Saying: "We Have To Re-Think The Problem And Place Both Societies In The Centre Of Our Analysis. This Change Of Paradigm Should Focus On Creating A New Cultural Space That Includes Both Societies A Space In Which Both Sides Have The Chance To Learn From Each Other." On March 9 1976 Soon After Graduating From University While A Graduate Student At The Same Department He Was Arrested For His Involvement In Producing A Student Journal That Focused On The Treatment Of Kurds In Turkey. He Received A Nine-Year Sentence In Early 1977 Which Resulted In Amnesty International Naming Him As A Prisoner Of Conscience. He Served For A Year Before Escaping From Ankara Central Prison On March 12 1977 Using The Leg Of An Iron Stove To Dig A Hole. He Received Political Asylum From West Germany In 1978 Where He Obtained Citizenship And Resided Until Obtaining His Doctorate Degree In 1995. In August 1988 Akçam Began Work As A Research Scientist At The Hamburg Institute For Social Research Following An Invitation From Iranian Scholar Hadi Ressesade. Ressesade Who Was Studying Torture In Iran Proposed That Akçam Could Do A Study On Torture In Turkey. Akçam Decided To Study Armenians After Meeting A German Librarian Of Lebanese-Armenian Origin Who Urged Him To Do So. In 1991 He Organized A Workshop On The Ottoman Military Tribunal That Judged The Crimes Of The Armenian Genocide. He Later Recalled "As I Progressed In My Readings Of Abdul Hamid's Massacres I Thought To Myself: I Know The History Of The French Revolution Of Russia In 1917 Of Chinese Communism But I Do Not Know Turkish History." Akçam Was Initially Reluctant To Use The Word "Genocide" For Anti-Armenian Violence Because "By Qualifying It A Genocide You Become A Member Of A Collective Associated To A Crime Not Any Crime But To The Ultimate Crime". An album with 108 photographs take by a party of four intrepid ladies travelling through the alpine glaciers of Switzerland and northern Italy in the 1930's. Baedeker's Guide for Switzerland 25th English edition 1913 notes that "with improved facilities for travel the number of visitors to Switzerland has greatly increased of late years and mountaineering ambition has been proportionally stimulated. Summits once deemed well-nigh inaccessible are now scaled annually by travellers from all parts of the world. and even ladies now frequently vie with the stronger sex in their deeds of daring." An interesting piece of women's social history. The 30s saw a period of increased independent travel of women: the infamous feud between the U.S. State Department and feminist journalist Ruth Hale was over passport rights and in the UK women could be included under their husbands passports until August 1988. The Ladies' Alpine Club established in 1907 to cater to female Alpinists à la the original The Alpine Club saw an explosion of popularity especially after Queen Margherita of Italy accepted the position of Honorary President. Female Alpinists were both trendy and transgressive. Acclaimed president of The Alpine Club Captain J. P. Farrar remarked: "It is possible that some unconscious feeling let us say of the novelty of a woman's intrusion into the domain of exploration so long reserved to man may in some quarters have existed. there tended to arise. an atmosphere shall we say of aloofness". The women in the present album seem to have been keen hikers with key details noted regarding their excursions: the page regarding their ascension of Piz Languard's 10722ft makes mention of their rising at 5am start at 6:20am and reaching of the summit at 10:30am. Photos of 'view to Italian border' as well as 'views of Austrian Tyrol'. Also illuminating from an ecological perspective; numerous photos serve as a glimpse into the Alps removed from contemporary accelerated climate change. As an example the photos of Roseg are an hour away from Corvatsch which notably went from a prime summer skiing location to impossible to ski from around 1992. [c.1930] hardcover
