Binding is mediocre though still shelf representable with spines mostly loose and reinforced with clear tape; inner hinges split. In a very good internal condition, very good maps. ~ First edition of this famous work. The hand-coloured maps depict famous battlefields: "Slag bij Ramelies," "Slag bij Malplaquet," "Gevecht bij Quatre-Bras," "Slag bij Waterloo." The last two maps are monochromatic. One shows the "Tiendaagschen Veldtogt in 1831", and one is the fortification plan of the Citadel of Antwerp with armies' positions during the battle in 1832.

This particular copy is accompanied by an extended archive of contemporary manuscript notes which relate to the book, summarize from it or elaborate on it. Written in Dutch in extremely neat hand they encompass a large number of paper slips, extracts from notes and the like. All neatly preserved they provide a fascinating look into the way contemporary law practitioners interpreted the laws of the time and are of value to historians of military law. [ADDED:] Original leaflet by Engelbrecht and Anemaet which accompanied the presentation of the first volume to the Subscribers. It announces their decision to issue this publication in two volumes, the 2nd to be followed in a later date. Each Subscriber is kindly requested to remit a total of 4 Dutch Guilders in order to cover the unexpected extra costs. ~ Beautifully illustrated. Collotype is one of the most accurate and attractive methods of photomechanical tonal printing processes. Highly skilled and expensive process, it cannot produce more than a limited number of impressions. It has been used for single-sheet prints and luxury portfolios, and since the 1950s has been abandoned by all except a few small specialist firms.
