Amersfoort, 1843). When also the pamphlet "Vlugtige bedenkingen tegen de denkbeelden van een oud soldaat (.)" appeared shortly thereafter, Stieltjes was quick to respond and his publisher issued in haste the publication "Nadere ontwikkeling (.)" (Nijmegen 1843). A few years later Stieltjes wrote in length his "Is Nederland nog te verdedigen? (Nijmegen, 1849), to be followed by "'Hoe Nederland te verdedigen is. See also: W. J. Knoop in "De Gids", 14th year, 1949-50.

In the supplementary tables he even provides a census of neighbouring municipalities, villages and hamlets that form the Defence Line of Amsterdam and specifies how many kilograms of meat, potatoes, peas, beans, rice, sugar, coffee, salt, paper, etc. etc. would be necessary to support these populations.

Vieillard-Baron, 'Hemsterhuis platonicien', in XVIIIe siècle, VII, 1975, p. 129-146). (R.E. Stoddard, 'Hemsterhuis, bibliography', "The Book collector", vol. 50/2, n°13, p. 197).
