Ce dernier ne prononce pas ce nom dans ses mémoires.Maxime Du Camp a parcouru la Hollande du 13 au 28 février 1857: Rotterdam, La Haye, Leyde, Amsterdam, Groningue, Utrech... en voiture et en chemin de fer. Il est un guide parfait, aussi bien dans les Musées que dans les rues, les marchés, les cabarets, théâtres, les bas quartiers de Rotterdam, chez les prostituées et les matelots, sur les dunes de Scheveningue, dans le quartier de Rapembourg où les Elzeviers eurent leur imprimerie, chez le petit peuple de Haarlem, chez les diamantaires, sur les canaux... Les catalogues des Musées occupent les pages 255 à 379.DU CAMP (Maxime)Poulet-Malassis n’a publié qu’un seul livre du très contesté Maxime Du Camp. « On l’a chargé de tous les péchés ; sans doute en avait-il commis beaucoup » dit Cl. Pichois in Lettres à Baudelaire p. 140. Fils d’un médecin aisé, Du Camp naquit à Paris en 1822 et mourut à Bade en 1894. Il eut très tôt le goût des voyages. A 22 ans, il alla visiter la Turquie, la Grèce et l’Algérie d’où il rapporta Souvenirs et paysages d’Orient (1848). Un second voyage effectué avec Flaubert mit en valeur ses talents de photographe (Egypte, Nubie, Palestine et Syrie, 1852). A la suite d’une randonnée en Bretagne, toujours avec Flaubert, il écrivit les chapitres de Par les champs et les grèves. Du Camp connut le succès avec des ouvrages à vocation industrielle et sociale. Il est aussi l’auteur de Forces perdues (1867) un roman paru en deux ans avant l’Education sentimentale et qui dépeint la désillusion d’une génération. Avec les Chants modernes (1855) dont la préface est un manifeste, il avait demandé aux poètes de refuser « l’art pour l’art » au profit d’un art didactique (inspiré par le saint simonisme) qui célèbrerait le Progrès, la machine à vapeur ou la locomotive.Du Camp est surtout connu aujourd’hui pour ses Souvenirs littéraires qui constituent un document sur Flaubert et le monde littéraire de son temps. Il fut aussi un des cinq fondateurs de la Revue de Paris à laquelle collabora Baudelaire qu’il avait connu chez Madame Sabatier. En 1885 Du Camp fut désigné, au nom de l’Académie, pour prononcer un discours officiel aux funérailles de V. Hugo. Il dut y renoncer car les journaux intransigeants excitèrent la population parisienne à siffler l’auteur des Convulsions de Paris. L’écrivain valait sans doute mieux que l’homme qui fut accusé d’ « arrivisme », d’hypocrisie, de déloyauté.

The concept of the Folio Society's Letterpress Shakespeare is that Shakespeare's text be magnificently printed from the latest "Oxford Shakespeare" edition under the general editorship of Stanley Wells in a fine large folio attractively bound in green half-goatskin with marbled-paper sides. The introduction and commentary are reserved to a separate specially-bound commentary volume so that the text-volume remains uncluttered and harmonious. The volume containing the original text comes hand-bound in green Nigerian goatskin leather. In a half leather binding. blocked in gold with hand-marbled paper sides. Gilded top edge and matching green ribbon page marker. Printed in 16 point 'Monotype' Baskerville with Caslon display Set in hot metal and printed by letterpress on Zerkall mould-made paper. The volume measures 10 X 14 inches. The commentary volume which includes the text of the play with full explanatory notes is bound in green buckram and measures 7.5 X 5.75 inches. 177313873Paris: Chez Valade 1773 First published in Neuchâtel though the title-page says "Londres" the previous year this is an early perhaps the first book-length commentary on Holbach's Le Systême de la Nature which was published in Amsterdam in 1770 with a bogus London imprint. Printing and the Mind of Man notes: "Holbach's target was the very idea of God. Even Voltaire was moved to reply in defense of religion by this "bible of materialism" P.M.M. 215. Contemporary mottled calf gilt spine with burgundy morocco spine label edges stained red. Two volumes in one twelvemo. With nine cancel leaves bound in at the end. Binding extremities lightly rubbed. A very good clean copy. In the preface the editor states that he has made various textual changes and has suppressed certain passages without Holland's permission so that the book could have a wider distribution. This copy is interesting in that it contains both Holland's 1742-1784 original text and the editor's "improvements." He also made various improvements to Holland's French Holland not being a native French speaker. This first edition of his commentary is rare: OCLC lists eleven copies eight in North America Yale LSU Michigan Boston Public Library Oklahoma Texas and Montreal. It is uncertain whether the first edition has the uncorrected text which we see in the cancels or something even different. Chez Valade, unknown

L'image montre une ville portuaire flamande, au premier plan, l'éboueur et sa charrette à cheval nettoie les détritus tandis qu'une bourgeoise, un verre dans une main, un pichet dans l'autre, lui offre à boire. L'image est accompagnée d'un poème à la gloire des éboueurs pour souhaiter la bonne année au destinataire. Belle épreuve, non rognée de cette rare estampe.

(Reliure de l’époque) 530 pp.ÉDITION ORIGINALE. Ces mémoires ont été écrits en néerlandais et traduits en français par l’auteur. Le style en a été retouché par Jean-Étienne Chappuy de Genève. Capellen (né à Zutphen dans le duché de Gulldre en 1743) fut un des chefs du parti patriote qui se prononça pour le maintien de l’ancienne constitution hollandaise. Au moment où le prince d’Orange songeait a s’emparer du pouvoir absolu, Capellen prit la tête de l’opposition. Orange continuant de favoriser le commerce avec les Anglais, Capellen décida les états-généraux à conclure avec la France un traité d’alliance défensive qui fut signé en 1783. Les orangistes et les patriotes en vinrent aux mains. Les Français s’étant retirés au moment où le roi de Prusse envoya en Hollande une armée de 30000 hommes, les patriotes durent s’exiler. Capellen fut condamné à périr sur l’échafaud en août 1788. Heureusement il se trouvait alors en France. C’est pour défendre son honneur et celui de sa famille qu’il écrivit ces mémoires. Dans la Biogr. Universelle Weiss dit que les pièces justificatives (pp. 177 à 522 du volume) “forment un recueil de documents précieux pour l’histoire des derniers temps de la république de Hollande”. Capellen ne prit aucune part à la Révolution française. Il partagea ce qui lui restait de fortune avec ses compagnons d’exil réfugiés en France et mourut aux environs de Paris en 1798.
