Description de la Hollande (villes et campagnes, population, agriculture, commerce, manufactures, moeurs et usages) correspondant au 1er volume des "Voyages dans la partie septentrionale de l'Europe, pendant les années 1768, 1769 et 1770, dans lesquels on trouve les plus grands détails sur la Hollande, la Flandre, l'Allemagne, le Danemarck [sic], la Suède, la Laponie, la Russie, l'Ukraine et la Pologne, relativement à l'agriculture, la population, les manufactures, le commerce, l'état des arts et les entreprises utiles": titre complet, trompeur, conservé pour cette traduction du seul 1er volume (Hollande), d'après la 2e édition, par Jean-Claude PINGERON, "capitaine d'artillerie et ingénieur au service de Pologne" (vers 1730-1795), qui y "a joint un grand nombre de notes" et une préface. Edition donc ici complète en 1 volume.

In a very good condition. ~ First edition. Extremely rare report on the massive Dutch army maneuver near Rhenen in 1911. The Appendices include several very detailed folding maps. Lithographed in brown ink and printed in additional colours they include a general overview map of the army large encampment between Ommeren, Renkum, Veenendaal and Opheusden; and several very large maps, scale 1:50000, which give troops' position and movement on different days of the maneuver. No other copy of this book could be located.

Engineer Lieutenant Colonel, Knight of the Order of the Netherlands Lion, Knight of the Order of the White Falcon, Knight and later Officer of the Legion of Honour, Knight of the Swedish Order of the Sword, Knight of the Order of the Crown Württemberg. Prolific and brilliant writer he wrote extensively on military fortification, engineering and fortress warfare. He died as Mayor of the City of Gendt. ~ First edition of Merkes' "Verhandeling over het belang der vestingen voor den staat" in two volumes (Brussel, 1826-27), is also available by Librarium.
