1646200094AG1646. Antwerp Ian Cnobbaert 1646. Original Engravings. Plate Size: 32 cm x 25.5 cm. Sheet Size: 34 cm x 29 cm. In very good condition with only minor traces of browning to outer margins. A fascinating collection of six engravings of battle scenes from Famiano Strada's De Thien eerste Boecken der Nederlandtsche Oorloge - a Dutch translation from the original Italian 'De Bello Belgico'. Strada's monumental work covered the epic Eighty Years War15681648 a religiously influenced war of liberation fought by the Seventeen Provinces of the Spanish Netherlands against the forces of the Habsburg Spanish Empire. Preceding and then forming part of the pan-European Thirty Years Wars the Dutch War of Independence ended with the Dutch Republic recognized by Spain and the major European powers. The independent Dutch were then to embark upon their remarkable Golden Age of the 17-18th centuries. The series of engraving presented here show some of the major engagements that helped shape the course of the war. They are rich in detail capturing the rush and horror of the clash of armies in the early modern period - to a degree where one can almost hear and feel the blasts of cannon and muskets crash of iron roar of men and the sound of excited horses leaping from the page. The decorative cartouches accompanying each scene provides explanatory notes on the unfolding dramas. A remarkable group of images. The titles of the scenes - in order of appearance in Famiano's are as follows: ''TGhevecht van Oosterweel Onder de Governante Margarita. Ann.1567'' ''Den Veldtlagh Van Heyligherless in Vrieslandt onder den Hertoghe Van Alba. Anno1658.'' ''De Belegeringhe Van Valencyn Onder de Govvernante Vrow Margarita Van Oostenryck Hertoghinne Van Parma. A.1567.'' ''Den Veldtslagh Van Heminghen in Vrieslandt Onder Den Hertoghe Van Alba. Anno 1568.' ''TGhevlecht Byde Riviere Gheete in Brabandt Onder den Heroghe Van Alba. Anno 1568.' 'De Belegeringhe Van Berghen in Henegovw Onder den Hertogh van Alba. Anno 1572.' Frans van den Wyngaerde or Frans van den Wijngaerde 1614 1679 was a Flemish printmaker draughtsman and publisher. One of the leading print publishers in 17th-century Antwerp he created and published multiple reproductive prints after Peter Paul Rubens Anthony van Dyck as well as foreign artists. Famiano Strada 1572 - 1649 was an Italian Jesuit historian and moralist. Strada taught at the Collegio Romano of the Jesuits in Rome. He taught rhetoric and Latin to among others Bishop Lorenzo della Robbia and Pope Clement IX . He was fiercely anti- Tacitus because he thought that this Roman writer stood for undermining the authority of the king and gave rise to a loss of confidence in leadership. The most famous work by Famiano Strada is De Bello Belgico decades duae 1555-1590 Dutch : The War in the Low Countries and was written with the help of Alexander Farnese 1545-1592 around 1602. It was published in 1632 and translated into Dutch in 1646. unknown

This edition was published by the Arion Press on the occasion of the opening of the Aurora Theatre Company's season in September 2011 its 20th anniversary with a new production of this play by Edward Albee. It was issued as the 7th work work in the Press's drama series honoring America's great contemporary playwrights. Edward Albee 1928 - 2016 was a major American playwright who won three Pulitzer Prizes for drama and a Tony Award for Best Play. In his perceptive introduction theater critic David Littlejohn asks "By what verbal and imaginative magic does Albee manage to transform stories as mean and vicious as these relationships so full of contentiousness and spite into profound and moving theatrical experiences" from the prospectus Tom Holland 1936 - is a well known artist based in Berkeley California. He was a friend of Albee who suggested him as the artist for this book. There are three illustrations in the book and one on the front cover. This handsome volume is bound in lavender cloth over boards with an inset on the front cover containing a Holland illustration. It has a purple goatskin spine with the title stamped in silver foil. Letterpress printed on Revere an Italian mouldmade paper using American Garamond and Univers types. The binding has a purple goatskin spine with title stamped in silver foil and lavender cloth over the boards with an inset area on the front cover containing the Holland watercolor. The edition is limited to 300 numbered copies for sale of which 50 copies are reserved for the Aurora Theatre Company and 26 lettered copies for complimentary distribution. All copies are signed by the playwright. "A Delicate Balance" is the newest work in the Arion Press drama series honoring one of America’s great contemporary playwrights Edward Albee. The edition features four illustrations by Tom Holland an acclaimed artist and friend of the playwright.

A mature couple Agnes and Tobias he recently retired lead upper-middle-class lives of quiet desperation. They reside in a Northeastern suburb where servants still cook dinner the country club plays a major role and living room bars are always well stocked. They have to deal with what appear to be four permanent unwanted house guests. David Littlejohn in his perceptive introduction asks: "By what verbal and imaginative magic does Albee manage to transform stories as mean and vicious as these relationships so full of contentiousness and spite into profound and moving theatrical experiences In his stage directions Albee specifically calls Tobias’s long near-hysterical self-contradictory third-act outburst in front of Harry his 'best friend' and life invader an 'aria'. Throughout it he provides dynamic and tonal advice in the manner of a composer or conductor - phrases all in capital letters semicolons and dashes ellipsis dots exclamation points and question marks often together - and stage directions that are the equivalent of a composer's marginal notations."

There are three illustrations in the book and one on the front cover. These are reproductions of watercolors printed digitally and tipped into and onto the book. As Littlejohn writes in his introduction: "Drinking as Tom Holland’s illustrations suggest plays a large part in this play - almost as large a part as in Albee's Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf I count about twenty-three glasses of hard liquor onstage in 'A Delicate Balance' plus Agnes's reference to good wine at dinner." Tom Holland has made abstract images of bottles and glasses that appear at the beginnings of the three acts and an abstraction of a house for the cover. These cunning watercolors look like stained glass windows with sunlight shining through.

___POSTAGE: International customers please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details.

___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA ILAB and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.
