Original half red morocco over rose cloth spines lettered in gilt with elaborately gilt decorated compartments. Top edges gilt. This set is Illustrated with over 150 steel and copper plate engravings printed on India Paper mounted on leaves of heavy paper stock. Each plate has a tissue guard printed in red. Each title page is printed in red & black and with a copper engraved vignette. This deluxe edition is limited to 1000 numbered sets this being #46. Some of the outer hinges and spine extremities are lightly rubbed and the outer front hinge of Vol. X is cracked but holding soundly. All in all a very attractive set. <br /> <br /> Note: "This edition of the life and works of Hogarth is edited from the texts by John Nichols F.A.S. George Steevens F.R.S. and Samuel Ireland with a new critical introduction by John La Farge . and a chronological catalogue raisonné by Austin Dobson. A slight abrasion to the spine of Volume 1 a short tear to the top of Volume 3. Unused volumes leaves uncut internals quite bright some light foxing confined to prelims and rears. Underwood William fl.1821-1856 printer Part title to 'The Masonic ritualist and lecturer' gives Archdeacon Walter Bishop Mant as the author. "MANT WALTER BISHOP 1807�1869 divine eldest son of Richard Mant q. v. was born on 25 June 1807 at Buriton Hampshire. He matriculated at Oriel College Oxford on 6 Feb. 1824 and graduated B.A. 1827 M.A. 1830. In 1831 he took orders and was appointed archdeacon of Connor by his father. In October 1834 he was preferred to the rectory of Hillsborough Co. Down and was appointed Archdeacon of Down. For many years he was provincial grand master and afterwards provincial grand chaplain of the freemasons of Down and Antrim. Like his father whose biographer he became he wrote verse. Includes a signed letter to Raglan from Anthony Christie the Honorary Secretary of The Royal Anthropological Institute. From the library of Lord Raglan Fitzroy John Somerset. Raglan"s great-great-grandfather was Field Marshal Fitzroy Somerset 1st Baron Raglan and hero of the Battle at Inkerman and Alma in the Crimean War. He also served as military secretary to the Duke of Wellington. He died in the Crimea in 1855. The house in which the library was situated Cefntilla Court was purchased by the Raglan Memorial committee for his descendants. Lord Raglan was a keen collector of anthropology and folklore with many of the works in his extensive library focusing upon this topic. Volume XL 1940 no. 1-230 with plates A-M.
