18139Watertown NY. 4 pp on a single folded sheet 8.5 x 11 inches when folded. Undated but reprints an article from The American Mining News August 1901. Old creases from folding staple holes at upper corner all else very good. Dunbar a broker appeals to Americans for investment in this Canadian mining region because "Canadians besides lacking the mining experience are too slow to take advantage of the golden opportunities which are being grasped by the more venturesome Americans." The Rainy River District he says "possess advantages over almost every other gold mining country in the world" due to easily worked ores and ready access to fuel water transportation and labor. A rare and lengthy report on a proposed treaty between the United States and Great Britain to drop the duty on Canadian coal imported to the United States. The authors of the report claim that importing coal and iron from Canada would free up American labor and capital to concentrate on other industries. This report presents a thorough statistical analysis of the issues involved. Then as now the free trade argument had many detractors but the authors of this paper favor dropping the coal duties. The United States and Great Britain signed a fisheries treaty in 1854 but a provision on dropping the duties on coal was not included. OCLC locates only three copies of this rare report. A Parliamentary printing of documents relating to the Webster-Ashburton Treaty of 1842 negotiated principally by Daniel Webster and Lord Ashburton which resolved several boundary disputes between the United States and Canada. Foremost it determined the border between Maine and New Brunswick which had been the subject of growing local confrontations known informally as the Aroostook War. The treaty also agreed on crimes for which extradition was possible and notably neglected to include flight from slavery on that list.
