Smith assisted by William J. McDonnell Winter 1892 and 1893. There are Aleutian words and phrases recorded in ms. on dozens of pages; and in addition illustrations of a side view and ground plan of a native Western Alaskan house with detailed description; drawings of characteristic features of Eastern and Western Alaskan natives snowshoes boats paddles etc. Two of these illustrated descriptive pages have neat vertical splits not affecting legibility. 19455579Fort Richardson Ak: March 1 1945. Very good plus. 8pp. of text folded accordion style folded out to a full-page map on verso. Light soiling and toning. A seemingly unrecorded guide and map to Fort Richardson located near Anchorage Alaska. The fort opened in 1941 as the headquarters for the United States Army in Alaska. For a brief time Fort Richardson served as a holding center for fifteen Japanese American internee families. The present guide "was prepared primarily for the information and guidance of military personnel new to Fort Richardson. It presents the rules regulations and facilities of the Post for easy reference." The facilities included officers' clubs theatres a library skating rink ski bowl and much more. A total of thirty-eight of these facilities are keyed to the map of the fort printed on the verso. When folded the pamphlet measures 6 x 4 inches and folds out to a total of 12 x 15.75 inches. We could locate no other copies of this early guide to an important American military base in Alaska during the Second World War. March 1 unknown

Light gray limp cover split-pin binder manuscript cover title rounded corners minor shelfwear rubbing still VG exemplar from the library of Captain Olaf Hansen 1877-1959 Danish-American sea captain from Seattle WA w/ bookplate on verso of front cover. A remarkable typescript manuscript detailing Captain Hansen’s experiences with Henry Carlton Strong 1869-1954 who not only was Ketchikan’s postmaster but also owned the Clark & Martin fish-saltery located at the mouth of Ketchikan creek. Hansen was recruited as an 18 year old to work on the steamer Alert a whiskey runner for smuggling from Port Simpson to Juneau when Alaska was still a dry Territory in order to secure the mail delivery contract. The Captain “was a part Negro and his name was Watson and was the only one available who had a second class pilot license for the Ketchikan District. . . as we had the mail contract on account of her speed.†He goes on later after picking up mail sacks that “our first stop was at Grindall where Thomlinson and Syare were located. They had a store. . . on the wall . . . I saw the lithographed map which was used in New York to make the suckers to buy stock in their mining company and it showed a fine big harbor with seven men of wars anchored in it and lots of room to spare.†Hansen jumps ship and heads back to Seattle and then down the West Coast while Strong would continue to establish and expand the Northland Steamship Company. In this sequel she struggles with the loss of her infant adopts two Yugoslavian children Dace & Lazar teaches them English and deals with a marauding bear frequenting their site. A unique school yearbook arranged by the students of Unalaska City School and rich with stories and photographs of staff and students with many of the local Indigenous Eskimo/Inuit students at work study and play. From the introduction: "Cuttlefish Three presents an account of the Jesse Lee Home at Unalaska during the early years of this Century. The Home was a Methodist mission that became famed for the quality of its students -- Dr. P. Gordon Gould Mr. Simeon Oliver Mr. Benny Bensen to name a few. Although the Home was first opened in 1890 and operated continuously until its move to Seward in 1924 'Home on the Bering' concentrates on the years 1911 to 1915. These are the years covered by the bulk of our material the scrapbooks compiled by Clara Cook." 19053538Copper River Valley Ak 1905. Very good. Forty-five printing-out paper photographs between 3.25 x 3.25 and 4 x 6 inches plus three real photo postcards. Minor wear a few creases occasional light soiling. A unique collection of almost fifty images capturing scenes in and around Copper Center in the Copper River Valley of Alaska in the years after gold was first found there in 1898. The images document pioneers panning for gold running dog sled teams posed in front of early wooden buildings in a bleak snow-covered landscape and more as well as capturing shots of a riverside mill a wooden bridge scenery on the Copper River and the majesty of the surrounding forests. A handful of the images capture pioneer women and children posed for the camera in winter clothing worn to combat the bitter Alaskan winters. One image pictures three men and two dogs standing outside the Hotel Holman an early Copper Center roadhouse that began in a tent but was opened in a wooden structure in 1899; the present image captures the post-1899 wooden structure. The Holman Hotel was established in July 1898 by Copper Center's first resident Andrew Holman in order to provide shelter for prospectors on their way to the Klondike gold fields. Copper Center is located northeast of Anchorage and served as a brief but important way station for gold prospectors in southeastern Alaska; one image here apparently pictures the early riverside settlement or is perhaps an early view of Anchorage. A rare view of Alaskan life in an uncommonly-seen settlement during the first decade of the 20th century. unknown

The interior contains two typed pages of menu items with prices under plastic holders. This menu is from circa 1955 at the Hammerhead Lodge which was the Naval Officer's mess on Adak Island Alaska. "On 1 July 1950 the Air Force transferred Davis AFB to the United States Navy who established an anti-submarine warfare base there. Adak was most recently run by the U. S. Navy as a deployment base for P-3 Orion maritime patrol aircraft primarily to conduct antisubmarine warfare operations against submarines and surveillance of naval surface vessels of the former Soviet Union. The Naval Air Facility was also reported to be used as a refueling stop for U-2 Dragon Lady ultra-high altitude reconnaissance aircraft. By the 1980s there were over 6000 Navy personnel on the islands. With the fall of the Soviet Union in the early 1990s NAS Adak's operational viability as a front-line military installation began to wane and in the mid-1990s a decision was made by the federal government to cease military flight operations there under the military's Base Realignment and Closure Program BRAC. On 31 March 1997 the Navy closed Adak Naval Air Facility. The lowering of the flag for the last time ended an era that began of 31 August 1942 when U. S. Forces landed on the Aleutian Island and established an advance base there for operations against the Japanese on Kiska and Attu Islands. The Navy left behind a contingent of 30 Navy personnel and 200 civilian contractors to maintain facilities keep the runway open and begin an environmental cleanup." . Hammer Head Lodge hardcover
