20563Twenty-seven 27 8†x 10†photographs showcasing high-end vehicles for rent from the Iowa Garage in Pasadana California owned by former race car mechanic Eugene Lajunie b. 1885. Each photo is accompanied by a typed caption giving the model number color some specifications and the price per day to rent with a driver. Vehicles include many touring cars and cabriolets made by Renault Packard and Daimler; a Sunbeam roadster town cars taxis a limousine army trucks a French truck mounted with an anti-aircraft gun and several remarkable “camera cars†made with front or rear-mounted platforms to hold movie cameras and their operators. Rental prices ranged from $35/day for a camera car to $75/day for the Sunbeam Roadster or a 1926 Renault cabriolet. Many of the cars are “posed†in front of beautiful homes on tree-lined Pasadena streets. These photographs would originally have been in a sales catalogue or album and there are remnants of the original pages on which they were mounted on the back of each one. Some have the original typed captions taped to the back others are accompanied by recent copies of those captions. These photographs were acquired as a group from the granddaughter of Eugene Lajunie and we believe the family made the modern captions to replace damaged ones from the original album. The images themselves are all original and in very good condition. Born in France Lajunie emigrated to the United States to work as the personal mechanic of racecar driver George Heath. Heath won first Vanderbilt Cup race with Lajunie at his side in 1904. Lajunie later lived in Davenport Iowa before moving to Pasadena and opening his Iowa Garage on South Fair Oaks avenue. There he personally repaired restored and equipped the vehicles he rented to Hollywood studios. unknown

1967038293
Washington D. C.: Government Printing Office 1967. 245 pages. Personally signed by President Johnson on a bookplate that includes the presentation written in calligraphy probably by Sanford Fox Chief of the White House Social Entertainments Office: "To Carl Hayden with my best wishes Christmas 1967." U. S. Senator Carl Hayden was at the time the longest serving 1912-1969 member of the United States Congress. Often called "the Silent Senator" because of his tendency to avoid speechmaking in favor of working behind the scenes Hayden was especially effective in promoting the federal highway systen and federal programs for mining irrigation and reclamation in the American west especially in his home state of Arizona. As President Pro Tempore of the Senate Hayden twice became second in the line of succession to the Presidency--first upon the death of Speaker of the House Sam Rayburn then after the assassination of President Kennedy. It is well-known that Johnson and Hayden both leaders in the U. S. Senate frequently worked closely together to get legislation passed. Less well known is that their personal relationship also was close. In a 1990 interview Roy Elson longtime member of Hayden's staff described the relationship: "there was a great deal of respect for each other and a real warmth." When Hayden retired from the Senate LBJ was a featured speaker in the retirement ceremony. The book is clean and tight in a clean and bright dust jacket that has some minor rubbing and several short closed edge-tears. SIGNED. First Edition. Hardcover. 187936110Washington D.C.: General Land Office printed in New York by Julius Bien lithographer 1879. Color-lithographed map. A very detailed colour-coded map of Louisiana showing towns rivers roads railroads among other landmarks.

The General Land Office was founded in 1812 as an independent government agency responsible for the surveying and disposition of land in the public domain. Prior to the Civil War much of the attention of the GLO was fixed on the settlement of such land east of the Mississippi which had resulted from military bounties and cessations by the original thirteen states. The end of the Civil War the Homestead Act the completion of the Trans-Continental Railroad and the military campaigns against Native Americans in the West with resulting treaties that "transferred" land ownership to the United States together engendered an incredible increase in westward settlement and expansion. Newly-admitted states and newly-created territories west of the Mississippi were primed for settlement. Between 1866 and 1876 the GLO surveyed over 200000000 acres of land in the public domain for settlement in New Mexico Idaho Dakota Nebraska Montana Colorado Wyoming and elsewhere. As the official surveyors of these remote areas and with access to military information the maps of the General Land Office were far and away the most accurate and detailed of the western states and territories published to that time. Indeed these large-scale official maps became the basis for future maps of those regions by commercial cartographers. In 1876 the GLO headed by S.S. Burdett published an atlas containing 18 maps on 19 sheets California being on two sheets showing the regions of the United States with newly surveyed and plotted public lands. Although the GLO had issued individual maps of the United States to accompany their annual report in 1866 and 1868 the 1876 Geographical and Political Atlas of the States and Territories sometimes referred to as The Centennial Atlas was the first atlas to be published by the department. The incredible growth of settlement in the west coupled with new exploration and surveying in the short time following the 1876 atlas engendered a second atlas to be published by the General Land Office between 1878 and 1879 i.e. where the present example is from. Like the Centennial Atlas the maps were composed by the chief draughtsman in the GLO Charles Roeser Jr. The maps were done on a large scale and are consequently very detailed. Chromolithographed by Julius Bien each map is colour coded to clearly depict land plotted for settlement the locations of the general land offices Indian territories county divisions towns rivers roads railroads etc. Furthermore like The Centennial Atlas the Atlas of the States and Territories over which Land Surveys have been Extended was produced for official purposes and distributed to members of Congress government agencies each land office the post office the railroads and other large entities and was not available for public distribution. The limited distribution of this atlas coupled with its large size accounts for its great rarity today; very few copies are known to be in private hands and no copies were in the famed collections of Rumsey Streeter or Graff.

Phillips Atlases 1405. The work owed its existence largely to the efforts of the American physician Lyman Spalding who began campaigning for a national pharmacopeia in 1815. Spalding's efforts finally bore fruit in a national convention that met in 1820 and adopted a pharmacopeia based mainly on the Pharmacopoeia of the Massachusetts Medical Society 1808. The 1820 Pharmacopoeia contained lists of medicinal plants minerals etc.—including several native American species—along with formulas for the preparation of 217 drugs considered to be the "most fully established and best understood" at the time.
