Originally published in 1899 this is a corrected revised copy published in 1903. Signed by James Stacy with a short inscription and dated 1911. Cover is firmly attached but both front and rear hinges are cracked. The front and rear endpaper are present but not attached. Water stains to the bottom third of about 40 pages which does not obsure any printing or photos. No markings foxing or soiling to interior. Corners of boards are bumped and board is exposed on very tip of corner. Some rubbing at head and tail of spine. Gilt on spine fairly bright and readable. Rear wrapper and final page of index detached but present some light staining to front wrapper and lower corner of first 40 pp not affecting text otherwise quite clean. Stitching loosening but holdng. Includes "An Act to Establish the University of Texas approved on February 11 1858 which set aside $100000 in United States bonds toward construction of the state's first publicly funded university. Also acts relating to the incorporation and relief of several different railroads; creating the counties of Archer Mason Menard Zapata Hardin Hamilton Kimble and Buchanan; and "An Act to permit free persons of African descent to select their own master and become slaves" approved on January 27 1858. Similar acts allowing for voluntary enslavement were passed in Florida and Tennessee the same year. Also noteworthy is a 43-page act supplementing and amending the Texas Penal Code that had been established in 1856 which provides an extensive list of criminal offenses and their statutory punishments including those for unlawful i.e mixed race marriage and a number of slavery-related offense. These are divided into those committed by whites inciting insurrection illegal transportation of slaves stealing or enticing a slave harboring runaways conducting business with slaves undue cruelty to and torture of slaves and those committed by slaves or free persons of color. An apparently unrecorded original railroad map dated Feb. 1872 showing the city of Vincennes Indiana. 19' h x 37" w on translucent vellum architectural paper scale 1" = 400 feet. Very Good number 920-4 in marker bottom right corner bottom right corner clipped not affecting any details of the map bottom left corner with 2 small holes punched faint creasing and light soiling. Drawn in black with cross marks in red and the tracks of the C & V RR in blue. Details include locations of depots mills foundries and warehouses along the Wabash River Catholic Church cemetery and property street names and location of a seminary. Additionally showing are the lines of the Evansville & Crawfordsville RR Indianapolis & Vincennes RR and the Ohio & Mississippi RR. Founded in 1732 by the French Vincennes county seat of Knox County is the oldest continually inhabited European settlement in Indiana and was the first capitol of the Indiana Territory. Its population in 1870 was 5440. The Cairo & Vincennes Railroad was chartered in Illinois in 1867 by Civil War General Green B. Raum. The railroad began laying track in 1870 and was fully completed in 1874. Established to move coal from the Illinois mines one of its first Presidents was the Civil War General Ambrose Burnside. It was reorganized as the C & V Railway not railroad in 1880 confirming the date this map was drawn. This is a vanity cartoon book also known as the 'As-We-See-'Em' books which includes a number of interesting people. There is no title page and no text; only about 200 plates of caricatures by one or another of the artists who were the staff cartoonists for this newspaper. Undated but made around 1905. Rebound: was originally bound in soft leather and the scarred front cover of the original has been applied to the new leather cover. New binding in excellent condition; overall vg- as there are occasional light marginal stains on the plates. Notables include B.F. Yoakum H.E. Huntington and W.K. Vanderbilt railroad barons Isaac and Solomon R. Guggenheim bankers and industrialists; also there is Wm. Guggenheim apparently a black sheep who travelled a lot John R. Dos Passos leaving a trail of books behind him Henry D. Estabrook lawyer Thomas A. Edison who seems to have wired the celestial bodies together Chauncey M. Depew attorney for Vanderbilt's railroad cartel and from 1899-1911 a US Senator Spencer Trask educator and a quite prescient drawing of Judge Albert B. Fall who became the 'fall' guy for the Teapot Dome scandal in 1921. The Great Lakes Navy Bluejackets football team compiled a record of 7-0-2 and won the 1919 Rose Bowl featuring three players George Halas Jimmy Conzelman and Paddy Driscoll who were later inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
