April 7 1828 stampless letter ALS from Gallatin to Columbus O'Donnell a Baltimore businessman who was married to the sister of Gallatin's daughter-in-law Josephine. Gallatin had recently retired from more than a quarter century in public life as U. S. Secretary of the Treasury and diplomat. The letter notes that he had recently returned to his home in New Geneva Pennsylvania and discovered that personal goods he was shipping to Baltimore needed attention at the other end of the trip. He requests that O'Donnell undertake the task and closes the letter warmly sending his respects to O'Donnell's wife. SIGNED. Original. Single Sheet. Very Good. 7 1/2 inches by 12 Inches. Manuscript. Some wear along folds and edges one tiny hole where two edges converge a spot in rear not affecting George Washington and a short tear along fold not affecting George Washington. Furman-educated Griffith served with Company E 14th South Carolina Regiment and was badly wounded both at the Battle of the Wilderness and at Gettysburg. After the war he returned to Woodruff South Carolina ran a small store for a while and served as a school teacher. Later he was president of Limestone College. The author of "Life of Landrum" and "Life and Times of John Ezell" Griffith recounts in this surprisingly well-written volume his war experiences at Chancellorsville and his regard for Henry Timrod Charleston South Carolina poet among a number of other subjects. This copy is bound in textured red cloth with light soil and wear at extremities; gilt-lettering on spine is faded. Hinges sound uncracked; nonauthorial gift inscription in ink. SIGNED by Griffith in ink in a rather shaky hand on frontis photo page; tissue guard intact. Pages tight clean but bit "wavy" perhaps due to humidity or bindery error. Flexible leather album front cover stamped in gilt with title "Autographs" surrounded by gilt flourishes spine decorated in gilt all edges gilt. 98 pp 19 of them blank leaving 79 with manuscript and 78 signatures 4 with writing in Japanese as well as English 3 with full page calligraphic drawings of birds with 38 photographs in the form of stamps including one oversize stamp measuring 1 3/4" x 2 1/4" of Mrs. C.C. Gaines wife of the President of Eastman College the other stamps all measure 7/8" x 1". The rest of the stamps are males either students or faculty. The photographic stamps were done by C. H. Gallup of Poughkeepsie NY. The album belonged to student Clif. J. Prosser. Very Good the leather rubbed at edges rear leather cover about half loosened from the board light soiling. In 1927 Walden helped train sled dogs and drivers for Admiral Richard E. Byrds Antarctic expedition and he led the dog-sled freighting of the supplies from the ships to Byrd's base camp "Little America". Walden later became the original breeder of the Chinook sled dog. In 1930 Walden considered to be one of the most respected and heralded pioneers of the Klondike and Alaskan gold rushes was presented a photographic album by Admiral Byrd that contained over 500 images of the Antarctic expedition of 1928-30. Dana Coman Dr Francis Dana Coman 1895-1952 was with Byrds first and second expeditions to Antarctica and was a personal doctor of Admiral Byrd. He later had a mountain named after him by Finn Ronne of the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition of 1947-48. Later Printing of this northland classic no date title page dated 1928 copyright page. Introduction by Walter Collins O'Kane. Illustrated with map end pages 12 black and white photos 9 attributed to noted Pacific Northwest photographer Asahel Curtis brother of the renowned photographer Edward Curtis 3 photos unattributed.
