Both volumes well rubbed at the corners evidence of removal of an ink stamp on title page of Vol. I which also has a small white stain on the front board. Text clean bindings tight; very good. Featherstonhaugh a British-born gentleman farmer and self-trained geologist began his journey at Washington D.C. and traveled to Detroit via Pittsburgh and Cleveland. From there he navigated by canoe on Lake Huron and Lake Michigan to Mackinac and Green Bay and then via the Fox and Mississippi Rivers to Saint Anthony and Fort Snelling. His party negotiated the Minnesota River as far as Lake Traverse on the Dakota border before returning to Galena and St. Louis and then traveling through Tennessee Georgia and the Carolinas. Of the southern portion of his journey Clark III 39 writes: "His principal interests were the Indians and the gold-mining operations in Georgia and North Carolina and these items are described in considerable detail." This is an oversized hardback book small folio sized The book is in Fair condition and was issued without a dust jacket. The front cover is disbound. The textblock is intact though a bit loose. The leather spine of the book is lacking. The first several pages the book excluding the front endpaper have a horizontal tear to the middle of the page starting at the foredge. The remainder of the text pages appear to be in clean bright condition. This block book in a way is similar to a plat map in that it shows the shape and size of allotments for buildings / residences etc. In this case the measurement used to define the allotments is the Vara: "The vara a Spanish unit of distance was used in the Spanish and Mexican surveys and land grants in Texas. One vara equals approximately thirty-three and one-third inches; 5645.4 square varas equal one acre; 1900.8 varas equal one mile; and 1000000 square varas which is one labor equal approximately 177.1 acres. The word vara entered the Spanish language from vulgate Latin and originally meant a long thin clean branch of any tree or plant." from the Texas State Historical Society. This book also contains information about the owners of each allotment. With a hand colored map of the southern half of the state by Sidney E. Morse and Samuel Breese and dated 1847. Lapham 1811-1875 arrived at what was to become the city of Milwaukee in 1836 and this is the second edition of the first significant treatment of the geography of Wisconsin. Lapham went on to study the Indian Mounds of Wisconsin and was instrumental in helping to create the U.S. Weather Service. No marks in book binding tight. Light foxing to end papers. Map complete with no foxing but has old tape repairs to one panel. Covers show one small ink stain on front cover upper corners bumped spine sunned with minor chipping along rear hinge. This volume has a bookseller's ticket from Raleigh NC from the "Southern Law Book Exchange". This volume also has 2 leaves 4 pages numbered 3-6 pasted into the front with the title "An Act for the Relief of Certain Confederate Soldiers Sailors and Widows" from the North Carolina General Assembly. It looks like it may have been cut out of another book. This Volume II also has an inscription at the front "James M. Ray's Volume / Bought at Raleigh / Sept. 1907. Pd. 60c". A former owner has laid in loosely some typed research on Ray noting that he enlisted on 5/26/62 as a 1st Lieutenant in Company "F" NC 60th Infantry Other information given including that he was wounded at Chickamauga GA and more information is given about the 60th Regiment. Rear inner hinge is splitting in this volume. Volume III is worn and stained and has a nick on the front hinge but appears sound. Volume IV has moderate wear and is sound.
