A detailed and mathematically elaborate promotional for irrigation construction by the California Corrugated Culvert Company. The booklet chiefly advertises various types of "Armco" flumes manufactured by the company and includes numerous photographic reproductions illustrations and blueprints as well as complex tables and mathematical formulae that testify to the safe quick and efficient movement of water by these structures. The complexity of some of the math printed here suggests that the pamphlet was aimed at engineers and other highly-educated employees of irrigation projects in California. Each ticket is unscratched. Fine condition as new alluringly printed in glowing colors the silver coatings are unblemished. Rare. Though individual used scratched tickets are sometimes available we have seen only a couple of unused tickets from this vintage for sale in the last 35 years and we know of no one else offering a complete set. Father Vicente de Santa María 1742 – July 16 18061 was a Spanish Franciscan priest who accompanied explorer Juan de Ayala on the first Spanish naval entry aboard the San Carlos into the San Francisco Bay. Maria wrote detailed first-hand accounts of the journey of the San Carlos and of the indigenous inhabitants of the San Francisco Bay Area prior to Spanish colonization. The manuscript came from the collection of Herbert S. Auerbach and an itinerary and index prepared for the volume by Richard Morrison. Describes in great detail a journey from Illinois to California by Harrow whose native country is unknown. An important scholarly resource which is seemingly quite scarce in the trade with roughly half of the print run already held by institutions. Michael Vinson unknown

Established in 1906 by Claudio Ellena a descendant of an Italian winemaking family. Claudio's sons eventually took over the business marketing their wine under the brand Regina Queen of Wines. The vineyard primarily produced sparkling and dessert wines and also operated a vinegar plant. The present work showcases wine labels as well as a sparkling wine dispenser so you can pour bottles of champagne "on tap." The brochure gives a history of the family and vineyards and strives to "acquaint you more fully with the many ways to really enjoy the goodness of fine wines without the burden of responsibility of minute details or formality." It also includes recipes for several champagne cocktails. unknown

Bohan 1849-1930 was a British-American author teacher & artist who was an ardent social reformer wrote for West Coast Magazine The Club Woman was an active supporter of women’s suffrage. Of additional interest are the several photographs by Charles Betts Waite 1861-1927 noted photographer in California until moving to Mexico City in 1896. Austin’s 1868-1934 success with this work allowed her to move to Carmel CA freed her from a loveless marriage to Wallace Austin and supplied financial resources for her physically and mentally disabled daughter Ruth who was consigned to an institution where she remained until her death in 1918 from the Spanish Flu Pandemic. The present map positions downtown Los Angeles at center right and its four corners extend to Inglewood West Hollywood Elysian Park and Huntington Park with Bekins buildings marked across the city. The verso prints a street index and a text advertising Bekins services illustrated with images of company vans employees and facilities. unknown

First edition of this fascinating biography of Lola Montez 1821-1861 -- i.e. Elizabeth Rosanna Gilbert courtesan dancer and also believed to have been the major inspiration for Arthur Conan Doyle’s Irene Adler and the “Scandal in Bohemia.†After nearly bringing down the government of Bavaria and King Ludwig I by living with him as her mistress with the newly granted title Countess of Landsfield and as unofficial consort wielded political power urging for reform which the 1848 Revolutions swept away and she fled. Later bigamously marrying Cornet George Heald in 1849 she began her very successful career as dancer during the California Gold Rush although she never trained to dance and married for 2 weeks Pat Hull California Newspaperman in Grass Valley. She is perhaps best remembered for tutoring the famed Lotta Crabtree dancer and acting sensation from Grass Valley. This volume also contains her lectures on Beautiful Women Gallantry Heroines of History Comic Aspects of Love Wits & Women of Paris and Romanticism which Montez used to challenge societal norms about the roles of women in society and instead of cosmetics recommended that women pursue temperance exercise and cleanliness. First edition one of 650 copies printed and then distributed by St. Matthew’s Church of this uncommon work where the second half of the book consists primarily of Dr. Halsey’s experiences as a member of a 49er Gold Rush “Company†and featuring his diary. Inspired by Horace Greeley’s Tribune trumpeting the California gold discovery Dr. Halsey and several friends after catching a Broadway production of “California and the Gold Diggings†organized pooled their money and set out for Panama. While waiting to sail from Panama City he notes a cargo of 200 gold ingots each weight 150 lbs. enroute from California. After arriving in San Francisco June 4 1849 the group experience the wild gambling dens hyper-inflation and head for Sacramento and the diggings at Big Bar on the Middle Fork of the American River. Even though Halsey tries to break off from the Company and speculate in real estate and set up a medical practice the company refuse to release him and they actually succeed in pulling 20-36 ounces a day from their diggings. After making back their investment and a little more he decides the area is over-saturated with doctors and returns to Unadilla NY. See: Kurutz California Gold Rush 308. She maintained an extensive practice in Boston as well as developed a large following in California and her 1904 biography stated “for eighteen years she has labored constantly in season and out of season not alone in Boston and its extended suburbs but in New York Brooklyn Philadelphia Washington Chicago and throughout California where during five winters she has had a large and successful practice.
