La Raza Magazine was a powerful voice for the Chicano movement published from 1967 to 1977. As the poster's text reiterates Chicano Mexican Latino whatever the label we are all people. 79631Handwritten memoir 35 pp. handwritten by an unknown person concerning their voyage from New York to California in 1849-50 during the Gold Rush. This narrative is written in three draft chapters and covers the voyage from New York to Bermuda where the writer’s ship underwent extensive repair.<br /> <br /> The writer was a passenger on the Powhatan which left New York on December 12 1849. Although he was cautioned at the docks about the ship’s seaworthiness the writer was assured by the Captain Benjamin Ward Tucker 1814–87 that all would be fine.<br /> <br /> However when they were a few days out to sea it was apparent the boat was leaking. “It turned out that no real danger existed or was likely to occur on account of the ‘leak’…†according to the narrative. “The ‘caulking’ as it is termed with which these seams are filled was rotten the coppering was worn out and this would cause any vessel to leak though comparatively new in all other respects. It was well however that we were strong handed as it required 1200 strokes of the pumps per hour to keep the ship free.â€<br /> <br /> The Captain continued the six-day voyage to Bermuda where they arrived on December 18. The company that owned the boat attempted to get it condemned but the Captain insisted on the repairs; they were in Bermuda for 40 days. The ship was recalked and coppered throughout and her running rigging was overhauled. Because no dry dock was available there is a detailed explanation about how the Captain was able to move the boat close enough to shore and tip it so the keel was exposed. All the expenses of the passengers were paid while they were in Bermuda.<br /> <br /> We have not been able to determine whether this Powhatan is the ship of the same name that sank off the shore of New Jersey in 1854 resulting in the loss of hundreds of passengers mostly German immigrants.<br /> <br /> During their stay on the small island of St. David’s in Bermuda the writer encountered Scottish soldiers who were stationed nearby. “Excepting the honor of our presence I do not know that St. David’s was ever enough distinguished for anything to make it worthy a place even in these rambling reminiscences. The soil of the Bermuda is not naturally good only hollows of their broken surfaces being used to cultivation all the rest is bare coral rock.â€<br /> <br /> One of the chapters includes a lengthy description of leaving the port of Bermuda under the direction of a “pilot†they were forced to hire who was drunk and nearly ran them aground. There are also descriptions of passengers including one who snuck aboard and was caught. This is followed by allusions to a one-sided passionate affair involving the stow-way and a married German woman Mrs. Wibbard who brought barrels of sauerkraut for the voyage to California where she and her new husband planned to open a boarding house.<br /> <br /> One of the drafts ends as the author is about to relate the story of a storm at sea. None of the chapters recall reaching San Francisco. The language is verbose and flowery and the writer often trails off on tangents concerning everything from sea sickness to hats.<br /> <br /> The manuscript pages are written on legal size white paper in black ink. There is some toning to the pages and general edgewear along with rust from a paper clip. Overall quite legible and very good. unknown

Small bump to lower left edge some chipping to bottom edge paper remnants along top edge and some marginal discoloration from previous matting. A striking waterfront view of Gold Rush-era Sacramento depicting an energetic and developing township recently flooded with emigrants from around the United States and the world. The image shows the Old Sacramento Waterfront from the Sacramento River towards the city down J Street. The busy commercial waterfront district is populated with dozens of people moving about the town as well as numerous houses identified businesses City Hotel Eagle Theatre Eldorado Exchange Fremont House General Jackson's Hotel J.B. Starr & Company and others tents one identified as Hot Cake and Coffee and wagons. The bank of the shore also shows stacks of building materials and cargo. Several vessels are pictured on the river including sailing ships a sidewheel steamship and rowboats. Interestingly one of the larger sailing ships sports the flag of a Chilean sailing ship.<br /> <br /> The view was produced just before the railroads came to Sacramento later in the 1850s. It was prepared by the French painter draughtsman and lithographer Louis Le Breton 1818-1866. Before largely committing to lithography in 1849 Le Breton concentrated much of his painting on nautical scenes as he spent much of his early career as a shipboard surgeon. The dating of the present lithograph is difficult as examples were produced for several decades in the 19th century and into the first two decades of the 20th century without distinction between the various editions. Interestingly Le Breton is also credited on a larger print of the present view titled Ville de Sacramento and dated 1851 which is held by the Bancroft Library. With regard to the present example we could locate no institutional copies. A stunning display piece of the capital city of California at an early time of explosive growth and development. 1974List3214Washington D.C.: Federal Bureau of Investigation 1974. Mailer measuring 8 x 15 ¾ inches folded in fours. Yellow tape to seal; else Fine. An FBI mailer soliciting information about Emily Harris and Patricia Hearst of the Symbionese Liberation Army SLA a left-wing militant group based in California and responsible for several killings and bank robberies between 1973 and 1975. Hearst the granddaughter of publishing tycoon William Randolph Hearst had been kidnapped by the SLA in February of 1974; in April she turned up on surveillance video robbing a San Francisco bank with other members of the SLA. Harris was involved in Hearst’s kidnapping and was at the time this mailer was distributed on the run with her husband William Harris and Hearst and wanted for firearms violations. The mailer describes the three as “armed and very dangerous.†<br /> <br /> The trio was arrested in San Francisco in 1975. The Harrises served eight years in prison but were re-arrested in 2002 for the murder of Myrna Opsahl during a 1975 bank robbery. Hearst served two years of a seven-year sentence; her sentence was commuted by Jimmy Carter and in 2001 she was pardoned by Bill Clinton. Federal Bureau of Investigation unknown

An exceptional architectural sales album for the historic Westlake Professional Building renamed Macarthur Park Medical Plaza 2007 Wilshire Blvd. designed to serve the burgeoning medical professionals in Southern California during the Roaring 20’s. This building designed by Charles S. MacKenzie a noted San Jose CA architect for the Wholesale Properties Corp. was “one of the earliest extensions of the medical community to Wilshire Boulevard . . . and had special amenities for medical professionals including gas electric and vacuum outlets in each suite circulating ice water and compressed air.†At a reported cost of $ 350000 the structural engineers were Noice & Merrill out of Los Angeles and building contractors were Walace & Bush. The enlarged linen-backed silver print of the TLS outlines the acceptance of the terms of the Trust to manage the building while the architectural renderings vividly portray the exterior elevation and interior amenities of the stately building erected at the corner of Orange & Westlake in 1922-1923. 1873List2825Eureka California 1873. Single 5 ½ x 12 inch ledger book with five small pages of notes and one short letter. Forty-two pages of the ledger filled out with many more blank. Some damage to spine on exterior otherwise very good to excellent. Offered here is a wharfage fee account ledger from Eureka California with dates between 1868 and 1873. The first Euro-American settlement at what is now Eureka on the Humboldt Bay was founded in 1850. It became a hub for bringing supplies to the Trinity Klamath and Salmon River mines both by water and over land and a major lumber manufacturing town with seven sawmills by 1858.1 Lumber vessels sent lumber down the Pacific coast as far as Chile. By the 1860s and 70s Eureka’s main exports were lumber and produce including pork and seafood via sailing vessels and there was also regular steamer service taking people and goods between there and San Francisco. Wharfage would have been paid at the port at Eureka for loading or unloading cargo; the ledger tracks ship names alongside either the names of men who loaded the cargo or the cargo type quantities and prices.<br /> <br /> 1 Owen Cochran Coy The Humboldt Bay Region 1850–1875 California State Historical Association 1929. unknown

Smith is remembered for her memoir Adobe Days chronicling her childhood on a sheep ranch in Rancho San Justo and her family's involvement in the development of Los Angeles. She was also a women's education advocate president of the Friday Morning Club and vice president of the American Association of University Women. <br /> <br /> <br /> Her earlier collections of California verse were printed by the Torch Press in Iowa. However this collection was printed by Jake Zeitlin Los Angeles bookseller two years after opening his first shop on Hope Street. A scarce piece of Southern California printing. . The first ALS note from Twohey Hager 1916-1997 on a notecard with seagull on the front mentions “No this is NOT a Sea Gull maskerading sic as a Pigeon. Hope you will find pleasure in having my story of Avalon and Bunker Hill.†The TLS at rear also featuring a Sea Gull motif dated July 30 1980 where she writes about enjoying a reheated meal from Pat as well as her eye operation discovery of high blood pressure and forthcoming visit to Mexico City. Sadly she suffered a devastating stroke in 1989 just 4 years after this publication and never her completed her book on the Ostrich Farms of Los Angeles. A very nice grouping of black & white straight photographic images shot by Bronstein sometime between 1978 and the late 1990’s when he lived between New York and Los Angeles. The sweeping opening photo depicts the beauty of Yosemite Valley with waterfall in right foreground and clouds hanging overhead followed by close-ups of the waterfall rugged snow-covered rocks river rapids and views from the valley rim of a sea of clouds. Southern Pacific Company et al. declaring the Southern Pacific Company’s ownership of a controlling part—46%—of the Central Pacific Railroad’s stock in violation of the Sherman Antitrust Act and requiring that this monopoly be dissolved. Offered here is a broadside produced by the Sacramento-based California Producers & Shippers Association which presents a collection of articles and editorials from area newspapers favorable to this “unmerger.â€<br /> <br /> The broadside came in response to the Southern Pacific Company’s propaganda campaign against the dissolution; the Sacramento Tribune draws the reader’s attention to:<br /> <br /> “the efforts which have recently been made by the Southern Pacific Company to deceive their employees into protesting the separation of the Southern Pacific and Central Pacific on the ground that seniority and pension rights would be disturbedâ€. August 25<br /> <br /> Several articles present a statement by P.R. Thompson chairman of the Peninsula Bureau Chamber of Commerce’s Transportation Committee who accused Southern Pacific of having “distributed a great amount of misinformation intended to becloud the issue and create oppositionâ€. Thompson called the claim that employees would lose seniority and pension rights the “Most flagrant and most apparently manufactured out of whole cloth.†Other articles note that Southern Pacific had been sending delegates to various Chambers of Commerce around the region to push resolutions against the dissolution. The Porterville Messenger writes:<br /> <br /> “Chambers of Commerce are becoming suspicious of the sleek well mannered business like gentlemen who drop into town urge a meeting of directors make their discourse and expect to depart with a resolution in their pockets. Usually the proposed resolution will bear study— carefully. Just now the Colusa Chamber of Commerce is compelled to reverse itself on the S.P.-C.P. unmerger.†August 25<br /> <br /> The Sacramento Bee described the efforts of these delegates as an “attempt to stampede public sentiment†but claimed that Company’s “flood of propaganda†had “utterly failed of its objective†September 9.<br /> <br /> Whatever the actual public sentiment may have been in 1923 the Interstate Commerce Commission ordered that the railroads be allowed to remain merged. That year the federal government—largely influenced by famously anti-labor Attorney General Harry M. Daugherty—declined to appeal a district court decision overruling the Supreme Court in favor of the ICC. We find no record of this broadside in OCLC. Driven primarily by ads written by Robert Crane the success was tremendous and as the Great Depression would later wear on Southern California became bitterly opposed to rural families staying and not returning to their homes. Very Good.</p><p>The quintessential poster from the United Farm Workers' Delano Grape Strike SIGNED by UFW cofounder Dolores Huerta; Helen Fabela Chávez UFW activist and wife of Cesar Chávez; and Arturo S. Rodríguez who succeeded Cesar Chávez as UFW president. This copy has a UFW union label bug and is a presumed later printing.</p><p>Andrew "Andy" Zermeño was the first artist hired by the UFW and his first task was the job of redesigning its logo. <em>Huelga!</em> "Strike!" in Spanish was his first poster for the organization and features the cartoon character Don Sotaco. "Even though Don Sotaco is dressed in tattered pants with a hole in his shoe the honorific title of 'Don' esteemed; sir and portrayal of the striker in motion with forceful facial expressions generate a sense of agency as well as urgency. 'I was trying to show the spirit of the workers.who were attacking the status quo' Zermeño recalled. 'And that they were eager to get in there to do something for themselves.' Running with the unfurled UFW flag proclaiming the strike Don Sotaco -- and by extension the UFW -- elicits action from farmworkers and their supporters.
