This book was published under the provisions of the Hide and Brand Law sponsored by the cattlemen of California in an attempt to "protect breeders and growers of cattle from theft." and allow for registrations and other protections. 19092864Hanford Ca: Hanford Morning Journal 1909. Good plus. Folding map approximately 25.5 x 22 inches. Original printed card wrappers. A couple internal tears and separations along fold lines repaired with tape on blank verso with resultant minor losses slightly affecting printed areas. The county south of Fresno and west of Visalia in the Central Valley was formed from Tulare County in 1893 and just over 200 acres were added in its northwestern region from Fresno County perhaps the impetus for the production of the map in the same year. In addition to the plat of the entire county the map shows the cluster of towns in the northern portion of the county the routes of the Southern Pacific and A.T. & S.F. Railroads which crossed in Hanford the outline of the "mostly dry" Tulare Lake bed and other water and geological features. Not in OCLC. Hanford Morning Journal unknown

1735200052AG1735. Nürnberg Homann c.1735. Original hand-coloured engraving with the Cartographer showing California as an Island. Plate Size: 57 cm x 48.5 cm. Sheet Size: 60.5 cm x 51.7 cm. Original map. Very good actually stunning condition. Some faint trace of browning to upper corners of sheet. Very minor tears to edges at centre-fold. A breath-taking illustration of a geographical clock by Zacharias Landteck who manufactured it in Nuremberg in the early 18th Century. Landteck's remarkable clock demonstrated the use of time to determine longitude a recurring problem for navigators and cartographers in the 18th and earlier centuries that was ultimately solved by John Harrison's marine clocks in the 1730s. Astronomical clock showing the northern hemisphere in day and night during the course of sun and earth for 24 hours. The German text to the left and right of clock explains the astronomical connections. It is surrounded by the Zodiac symbols and their corresponding calendar months. At the centre of the face is a polar projection of the Northern Hemisphere with the Eurasian the northern portion of the African and North American landmasses shown. Islands such as Greenland Iceland the Canaries the Caribbean islands and the Philippines can also be seen. Interestingly California is shown as an island. Regions such as Florida Nova Mexico Siberia and Tartaria are included as are the names of major cities such as Manila Peking Jerusalem Aleppo Constantinople Copenhagen Amsterdam London and Dublin. Much of Western Europe and North America are in starlit darkness while Asia enjoys the sun's rays. Johann Baptist Homann 1663-1724 was a mapmaker who founded the famous Homann Heirs publishing company. He spent his life in Bavaria especially in Nuremberg. Initially Johann trained to become a priest before converting to Protestantism and working as a notary. In 1702 Homann founded a publishing house that specialized in engravings. The firm flourished becoming the leading map publisher in Germany and an important player in the European map market. In 1715 Johann was named Imperial Geographer to the Holy Roman Empire by Charles VI and made a member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences. Most significantly for his business his reputation and contacts gained him Imperial printing privileges which protected his publications and recommended him to customers. Johann is best known for this Grosser Atlas ueber die ganze Welt or the Grand Atlas of the World published in 1716. After Johann died in 1724 the business passed to his son Christoph 1703-1730. Upon Christoph's early death the company passed to subsequent heirs with the name of the company changing to Homann Erben or Homann Heirs. The firm continued operating until 1848. unknown

191557849Petaluma CA: Brainerd Jones Architect ca. 1915. Five linen-backed cyanotype blueprints. Oblong atlas folio. 20.75 x 12 in. floor plans and elevations w/ annotations w/in the image and embossed architect’s stamp at lower right corner of each drawing minor wear & creasing at fore-edges still VG bright exemplars. These original blueprints represent a stylish two bedroom Craftsman bungalow from noted California architect Brainerd Jones 1869-1945. This bungalow features a well appointed kitchen and pantry with built-ins and a screened porch accessible from the kitchen and bedroom. The blueprints also note that the attic was to be built as unfinished with studs framing a couple potential rooms while the built-in cabinets downstairs to frame the fireplace were to be fitted with mirrors as back-splash and sides. This Arts & Crafts home does include his distinctive flair of the roof with well defined roof line and decorative gables. Labeled by the Argus-Courier as “The man who built a city†it’s estimated that up to 80% of the historic homes and buildings in Petaluma were designed by Jones. 198912906Santa Rosa CA: Graphic Concepts 1989. Broadsheet cartoon map 22.25 x 16.75 inches with printed information on verso intended as a brochure but in this case unfolded. Some dampstaining along bottom portion mostly visible on verso with old tape at each corner of verso from previous mounting likely removed from a wall or bulletin board long ago. Otherwise minor wear. Good plus. Rolled. A lovely illustrated map of Napa Valley highlighting one of the region's most distinctive and iconic characteristics -- its robust viticulture industry. Numerous vineyards and wineries dot the fertile valley epitomized by an idyllic scene in the upper right corner. Notable names include Robert Mondavi Charles Krug Beringer Stag's Leap Sutter Home and Charles Shaw the source of Trader Joe's "Two Buck Chuck". The design and layout were executed by Ron Morales with artwork by Susan Clifford. This is one of several similar wine maps created by Morales though the emphasis on Napa Valley is an uncommon characteristic. The notice in the bottom margin reads "Copyright 1989 by Graphic Concepts" of Santa Rosa California. Charts on the verso lists the wineries by county and their various amenities and operating hours as well as local accommodations entertainment restaurants and so forth. This work was intended to be folded as a brochure for easy transport but the current example was never folded; it was likely posted at a winery or local business in Napa Valley and taken off the wall at some point. OCLC records just two copies of this delightful map fit for the wall of any wine enthusiast at the Library of Congress and the University of Utah though it is difficult to believe copies don't reside at various California especially northern California institutions. Moderate scuffing soiling some small creases a few short closed tears one repaired on verso pinholes at corners and along edges. A wider-than-usual panoramic photograph capturing for posterity many of the commercial enterprises along Main Street in San Mateo California in the mid-20th century. The unnamed photographer seems to have stood directly across from the Tecco Electric Construction Company and shot that side of Main Street from San Mateo Florist and Mohawk Gasoline to the left to well beyond the B.F. Goodrich on the right. Some of the other businesses include Sarganis Brothers Custom Interiors Peninsula Wrought Iron Works H.H. MacDonald Homes offering houses in Glenwood Heights Ferreira Paints and L.K. Ward Home Appliances. A handful of blurry automobiles are pictured driving one way or another on the main thoroughfare. A wonderful snapshot of midcentury San Mateo that would make a striking display piece in any midcentury-styled home. unknown
