1933806Aurora Mo: Mid-West Map Company 1933. Good. Folding map 21.75 x 17 inches. Printed in blue. Light wear and soiling some faint dampstaining. Tape repairs at central corner folds on verso. Folding highway map of California and Nevada with extensive advertising for the Palms Tourist Camp in Los Angeles. The map key delineates paved graded and unimproved roads as well as connecting county roads. Interestingly much of the Pacific Coast Highway is identified as either graded or unimproved and almost none of Nevada's roads are paved. Numerous small towns are marked as are national parks. It seems likely that the general map information was printed with space left for custom sponsorship such as that of the Palms Tourist Camp on the present example. 19023688San Francisco: Star Press 1902. First Edition. Good. Small 4to. 44 pp. Original printed wrappers chipped spine partially defective. The complex and protracted litigation over the San Francisco estate of one of the richest men in America mining tycoon James Graham Fair dragged on for many years after his death in 1894. Born in Ireland in 1831 Fair and his impoverished father came to the U.S. in 1843. James went to California in 1850 to labor as a lowly prospector; he soon turned his attention to Nevada. After working as a superintendent and engineer at various mining sites he formed a partnership with three men two of whom were born in Ireland and one was the son of Irish immigrants. Together they made millions in silver mining in the Comstock Lode one of the largest silver deposits ever found; indeed in just six years the Comstock Lode produced more than $100 million worth of silver bullion $3.5 billion in today's currency. By 1875 the four "Silver Kings" had become fantastically wealthy. Fair invested shrewdly in the South Pacific Coast Railroad and in real estate. But money led to a dissolute life of affairs and alcohol. In 1883 his wife filed for divorce which was uncontested; she received the family mansion and nearly $5000000 in cash at that time the divorce settlement on record while also gaining custody of their two daughters from whom Fair had become estranged. His two sons also caused him much unhappiness. He campaigned successfully for a seat in the U.S. Senate in 1881 but following his defeat in 1886 he lived the rest of his life alone in a hotel. At his death Fair's wealth was estimated at $50000000 -- an almost unbelievable sum in those days.

Our volume is S.F. 2871 March 19 1902 and concerns the famous litigation of the $18000000 worth of real property in Fair's trust and estate. Here the appellants in the case are the counsel of said trust which was created by Fair's will for his children during their lives followed upon their death by a trust to others. The trustees were empowered "to sell any property" real or personal and to invest the proceeds and to purchase other property or to apply the proceeds of sales to the improvement of other property and for any other of the purposes declared in the will and to pay to the children mouthly "the net income." The court declared void the entire trust scheme as to the realty. An interesting aspect of the case involves the forensic accounting undertaken by one of the appellant's laywers George E. Crothers who had personal charge of the forgery branch of the litigation; Crothers won a notable victory in the proof of a forgery by original mathematical lines of deduction based upon consecutively numbered checks. Qualche strofinatura e lievi segni del tempo. Piatti foderati con carta marmorizzata coeva. All’interno esemplare in buone-ottime condizioni di conservazione, completo. Opera completa. Rif.Bibl.: Judd, 57; Hill 500; Howes D547; Sabin 21164; Zamorano 80,31; Forbes, 'Hawaiian National Bibliography', 1260.

77435Campaign materials for the U.S. Presidential run of John George Schmitz 1930-2001 the ultra right-wing California Congressman whose career ended when it was revealed he had an extra-marital affair and fathered two children with one of his former college students. Schmitz also held the dubious distinction of being the father of teacher Mary Kay Letourneau 1962-2020 convicted in 1997 of child sexual abuse for having an affair with her sixth-grade student whom she later married.

Schmitz was notable for his extreme right-wing sympathies and for his slurs against African Americans Asian Americans Latinos women Jewish people and the LGBTQ plus community. He was a leader of the John Birch Society which ultimately expelled him for extremist rhetoric. In 1972 he was the candidate for President of the United States of the American Independent Party later known as the American Party.

His political career began in 1964 when he was elected as a Republican to the California State Senate; he was reelected in 1966. He was then elected to the United States Congress in 1970 representing Newport Beach's 35th District for a single term. After losing his congressional reelection bid in the June 1972 primary Schmitz was nominated to run for President by the American Independent Party. Although unsuccessful he and running mate Tom Anderson received more than one million votes.

This collection includes six broadsides promoting Schmitz's 1972 presidential campaign. Five are 8 ½" x 14" and one is 10" x 14". One poster complains of the lack of news coverage of his candidacy: "What is the news media afraid of Why don't they want to hear what he has to say" In another Schmitz compared himself to George Wallace and bashed his opponent Richard Nixon's policies: "Your vote for Nixon has brought you busing 25% increase in the national debt 23% increase in major crimes continued war in Viet Nam decline in military morale and preparedness."

After losing Schmitz returned to the Republican Party and ran unsuccessfully for Congress in 1976. He served again in the California State Senate from 1978 to 1982 but lost a reelection bid after admitting to an affair and fathering two children whom he never helped raise or support. unknown

18555250London: May 19 1855. About very good. 2pp. on a bifolium. Previously folded. Light wear along top edge; short closed tear at right margin. Scattered faint foxing. With original mailing envelope. This two-page printed circular dated May 19th 1855 from the Anglo-California Gold Mining Company in London offers to convert "unissued shares" of company stock into "preference shares." The first page of the circular reads in part:

"You will observe from the enclosed report not present of the adjourned General Meeting that circumstances have arisen in California rendering it imperative that the Director should immediately have at his command a further sum of £6600. You will also observe that the Board have power to convert the unissued shares into preference shares at par to be offered in the first instance to the present holders of shares. The advantage offered to persons taking those Shares is that they are guaranteed a dividend of 25 per cent per annum before any dividend is paid on the other Shares."

The second leaf of the bifolium prints a blank form for recipients to purchase said preferred shares. During the first years of the California gold rush approximately 120 companies formed in Great Britain to offer mining shares in the booming goldfields to the public. Many saw these companies as an opportunity to invest in the boom without facing the expense or the danger of traveling to California. Most however ended in failure and investors collectively lost almost £2 million at the time.

The Anglo-California Gold Mining Company formed by Luke Williams in March 1849 was one of the first and largest of these British ventures and it sold thousands of ten shilling shares to the public. Williams sent a former Royal Navy Captain Henry Vere Huntley to the Calaveras River in early 1850 to start the operation. When he failed Williams arranged a deal with Fremont's Quartz Rock Mariposa Gold Company to crush and refine their ore and the ore of smaller ventures. To that end the company sent two steam-powered crushing mills to California and when those proved useless to the task the company failed. May 19 unknown
79631Handwritten memoir 35 pp. handwritten by an unknown person concerning their voyage from New York to California in 1849-50 during the Gold Rush. This narrative is written in three draft chapters and covers the voyage from New York to Bermuda where the writer’s ship underwent extensive repair.

The writer was a passenger on the Powhatan which left New York on December 12 1849. Although he was cautioned at the docks about the ship’s seaworthiness the writer was assured by the Captain Benjamin Ward Tucker 1814–87 that all would be fine.

However when they were a few days out to sea it was apparent the boat was leaking. “It turned out that no real danger existed or was likely to occur on account of the ‘leak’…†according to the narrative. “The ‘caulking’ as it is termed with which these seams are filled was rotten the coppering was worn out and this would cause any vessel to leak though comparatively new in all other respects. It was well however that we were strong handed as it required 1200 strokes of the pumps per hour to keep the ship free.â€

The Captain continued the six-day voyage to Bermuda where they arrived on December 18. The company that owned the boat attempted to get it condemned but the Captain insisted on the repairs; they were in Bermuda for 40 days. The ship was recalked and coppered throughout and her running rigging was overhauled. Because no dry dock was available there is a detailed explanation about how the Captain was able to move the boat close enough to shore and tip it so the keel was exposed. All the expenses of the passengers were paid while they were in Bermuda.

We have not been able to determine whether this Powhatan is the ship of the same name that sank off the shore of New Jersey in 1854 resulting in the loss of hundreds of passengers mostly German immigrants.

During their stay on the small island of St. David’s in Bermuda the writer encountered Scottish soldiers who were stationed nearby. “Excepting the honor of our presence I do not know that St. David’s was ever enough distinguished for anything to make it worthy a place even in these rambling reminiscences. The soil of the Bermuda is not naturally good only hollows of their broken surfaces being used to cultivation all the rest is bare coral rock.â€

One of the chapters includes a lengthy description of leaving the port of Bermuda under the direction of a “pilot†they were forced to hire who was drunk and nearly ran them aground. There are also descriptions of passengers including one who snuck aboard and was caught. This is followed by allusions to a one-sided passionate affair involving the stow-way and a married German woman Mrs. Wibbard who brought barrels of sauerkraut for the voyage to California where she and her new husband planned to open a boarding house.

One of the drafts ends as the author is about to relate the story of a storm at sea. None of the chapters recall reaching San Francisco. The language is verbose and flowery and the writer often trails off on tangents concerning everything from sea sickness to hats.

The manuscript pages are written on legal size white paper in black ink. There is some toning to the pages and general edgewear along with rust from a paper clip. Overall quite legible and very good. unknown
