19443081N.p. but perhaps Oakland or Berkeley 1944. Very good. Printed broadside 5.25 x 8 inches. Minor foxing and staining light edge wear penciled note covering most of verso. A small and apparently unrecorded broadside calling for African Americans interested in working as bus drivers and street car operators in the San Francisco Bay Area during the latter portion of World War II. The notice calls for interested parties to apply at the offices of the East Bay Employment Association between 4:00 and 8:00 PM between December 1 and 9 1944. We could locate no information on the East Bay Employment Association but it was almost certainly located in either Oakland or Berkeley. This employment advertisement was perhaps the result of a wartime shortage of bus drivers and street car operators in the Bay Area. We could locate no other copies of this interesting and somewhat mysterious broadside. unknown
19741406
70 pp. collection of stories illustrated throughout. 8vo. Accent of California International Writers Series 2 Very good. Illus. stiff wraps. 1406

The Kentucky-born Los Angeleno author's debut short story collection including "The Price of Dirt" "The Way of Shadows" "In the Dark" "Waiting for Mongo" and "Roman Times" which won the Gwendolyn Brooks Literary Award in 1972. In his preface to the work Jones explains that "most of the stories in this collection employ modern literary techniques as diverse as impressionism and surrealism and especially important is the experimental synthesis of fantasy/realism. Myths and mythical notions for example are sometimes utilized in a campy fashion. Black field hand dialect might end up in the mouths of the most educated aristocrats. Nevertheless all of this is not only plausible and appropriate to the situation but also creates effects which are organically natural to the stories in this book. THE PRICE OF DIRT is the collected stories of a people's reactions to a fantastic world designed to exclude them and their reality." Scarce in the marketplace and institutionally uncommon.
Accent of California

59219San Francisco: P.P. Tornich ca 1922. Three vintage silver-gelatin prints approx. 7-1/2" x 9-1/2" one slightly smaller on commercial mounts ca 11" x 14." The prints show mild surface wear but are clean and retain excellent contrast; moderate soiling to mounts; Near Fine. One mount printed with the photographer's address 110 Congo Street San Francisco at lower right; one image captioned in the negative "Croatian Club Banquet / Feb 11 - 1922 / P.P. Tornich photo" with photographer's embossed stamp at lower left; third image unsigned but clearly from the same or a similar event and in a mount of similar style and date.

Three excellent portraits documenting a meeting of the San Francisco branch of the Hrvatski Sokol a Croatian nationalist membership organization founded in Prague in 1862. The Sokol was modeled on the German turnverein emphasizing gymnastics and physical culture while promoting nationalist sentiment and military preparedness. In the United States the sokols persisted as a means for Croatian immigrants to retain their national identity against the intense pressures of assimilation they faced in their adopted homeland.

The photographs - all group portraits - depict banquet attendees in various costumes ranging from conventional business attire to traditional hunting outfits including feathered caps. In one photograph the group's banner is prominently displayed hanging over a long banquet table the traditional Croatian hawk surrounded by the words "Hrvatski Sokol / San Francisco Cal."

Of the photographer P.P. Tornich we can discover little regarding his professional activities. The Bancroft Library records one holding for an album of Tornich photographs dated 1933 published by the Portola View Company of the first convention of the Slavonic Alliance of California; we find no other institutional records of work by this artist. However Tornich appears to have been a prominent figure in Slavic-American circles in San Francisco serving for at least fifteen years as an officer of the Slavonic Illyric Mutual Benevolent Society for at least three of which he was the Society's President based on advertisements in the San Francisco Call 1897-1912. unknown

70652Very good. An album containing thirty 4" x 4" black and white photographs of Catalina Island at the turn of the century. Four of the photographs are laid in; the rest are secured in the album with photo corners built into the pages. There are no markings in the album or on the photographs with the exception of a stamp noting that the photographs were printed by Merick Reynolds Co. on Broadway in Los Angeles. The album contains a variety of images of men women and children in Victorian dress and a few coastal shots. Notably the album includes a photograph of two women climbing up the steep wooden ladder of Sugarloaf Rock in Avalon Harbor. Remarkably they are in Victorian dress with long skirts. Sugarloaf Rock was graded and blasted away to make way for a hotel where ultimately the Catalina Casino was built in 1919. The album also includes a photograph of the S.S. Hermosa at the long pier in Avalon Harbor. The Hermosa according to an article in the 2007 Catalina Islander newspaper was launched in 1888 by the Wilmington Transportation Company and was the largest and most elegant vessel of its kind on the West Coast. It was a wooden ship 141 feet in length and capable of carrying 150 passengers. The well-known Hungarian Orchestra usually accompanied passengers on the almost three-hour crossing. She was decommission in 1902 stripped of her luxuries and burned in Avalon Bay during a 4th of July celebration. The album is bound in gray heavy paper wraps. All in very good condition. unknown books
