First edition of this well-illustrated guidebook to the newly opened Lankershim Hotel in Los Angeles CA during the Progressive Era completed and opened by 1906 designed by Los Angeles Architect Robert B. Young 1855-1914 for James Boon Lankershim 1850-1931. The Lankershim’s Automobile Bus service drove the traveler through the electric light displays and the broad streets in downtown Los Angeles and this brochure announces that 30 newly renovated “Sample Rooms†out of the hotel’s 350 rooms had been made available for salesmen to set up their sample wares and show clients on their 60-200 feet of table sapce and excellent lighting along with display items and even attached private baths to operate as pop-up commercial stores. The Lankershim Hotel operated until about 1971 when after suffering significant damage in 1971 it was forced to close the upper 7 floors and then in the mid-1980’s everything above the 8th floor was razed for a parking garage. Original typescript manuscript of this concise and detailed history by a former Southern Pacific Sacramento General shop engineer who retired in 1948 and is perhaps best remembered as developing and designing the 6-chime whistle that became the Southern Pacific standard and photographer for the SP. This manuscript details not only early Sacramento and California history but also accounts of the Sacramento Auburn & Nevada RR Sacramento Valley RR and the early development of railroads into Sacramento in the 1850s. Following this are extended chapters on the Central Pacific RR the building of the Folsom CA for the Sacramento Valley RR and the completion of the General Shops and Roundhouses in 1868 as well as descriptions of the Car Shop Planing Mill Machine Shop Boiler Shop Drawing Room along with the later introduction of power generating plants and electric railways. Included are sections on puff pastries German Coffee Cakes dumplings tarts and elaborate fancy deserts with over 100 pages of cake and pastry designs for the pastry and candy shop. Included as well are recipes for everything from Mexican Sausage to Suckling Pig and applesauce as well as Green Turtle Soup and Horseradish Butter. Vandegeer 1867-1928 worked in hotels as baker and pastry chef in leading hotels of France Belgium and the Netherlands before finishing his career in Southern California near San Diego and eventual retirement by 1924. First edition of this remarkably scarce promotional brochure and souvenir to the Xth Olympiad held in Los Angeles in 1932 which served to transform the Southern California City into an internationally important global metropolis. In the midst of the Great Depression only 37 nations competing in 14 sports participated relying on existing Southern California venues to host the events and newly constructed Los Angeles Swimming Stadium still open to the public today. Amazingly the 1932 crowd participation in Los Angeles was immense with 100000 people attending the opening ceremony and was the first to cut the span of competition to just 16 days housed athletes in a single place and medal winners stood on a podium with flag of the winner being raised.
