The articles include: "The Origin & History of the Royal Society"; Electricity and Light; Gravity; Magnetism; Dyeing the color purple; "Aboriginal Inhabitants of the California Peninsula"; and perhaps most importantly "Aeronautic Voyages (Balloon Flights) Performed with a View to the Advancement of Science." Because of the Civil War, this volume could not be published until 1872.

Marlette's report includes primarily an account of the Northern Boundary Survey extending as far north as Pilot Knob. He also offers strong criticism on the quality of California mapping sums up the status of various rail lines through the state and encourages the development of a county road system. An example of the Indianist movement in American classical music this composition was based on a text and melody transcribed by ethnomusicologist Natalie Curtis in The Indians Book 1907. San Francisco composer Carlos Troyer added a piano accompaniment he described as a "drum imitation." The cover reproduces an 1886 C.S. Fly photograph of Geronimo on the Warpath owned by Charles Lummis who supplied a short introductory essay titled "Geronimo The Apache Prophet." Also printed on the cover is the dedication "To Mrs. Rita Breeze of Los Angeles California." Breeze was a librettist who collaborated with Troyer on several projects.
