193317547<p>Hollywood: Press of Hollycrofters 1933 One of 125 copies of this collection of aphorisms and anecdotes by Nicolas Chamfort 1741 – 1794 author and secretary to the sister of Louis XVI. Publisher's reddish-brown leather titled in gilt on spine. . Octavo. Set in Poliphilus and Blado and printed on handmade paper at the Press of Hollycrofters. Some edgewear and smudging. Toning to edges. A very good copy. We could not find much information on the Hollycrofters. Their publications date from 1929 to 1958 with most dating from the 1930s. Their other titles include Lucile Phillips Morrison's Doll Dreams 1932 which compiled short fiction by children with illustrations by California artists like Paul Landacre and Millard Sheets. They also published books with a Western Americana interest including Indians of Death Valley by Lydia Clements 1953 and Orphans of the Desert by Leo Papiano 1929 which was one of their earliest publications.</p> Press of Hollycrofters, hardcover

Half inch gage white plastic comb spiral binding has a single fracture midway; the wraps are scuffed stained and discolored; interior clean but age toned which is more even uniform and intentional looking than yellowing; POS on front cover. 284 pages of recipes with contributor's name and often affiliation and location as well. As is often the case with vintage mid-century cookbooks the instructions entail some culinary experience and the ingredients vary from industrial jello canned to farm-to-fork style and international fare from the immigrants. Featuring an introduction by the beloved book illustrator historian and muralist Leo Politi this delightful historical essay captures a lost era in LA history. The first ALS note from Twohey Hager 1916-1997 on a notecard with seagull on the front mentions “No this is NOT a Sea Gull maskerading sic as a Pigeon. Hope you will find pleasure in having my story of Avalon and Bunker Hill.†The TLS at rear also featuring a Sea Gull motif dated July 30 1980 where she writes about enjoying a reheated meal from Pat as well as her eye operation discovery of high blood pressure and forthcoming visit to Mexico City. Sadly she suffered a devastating stroke in 1989 just 4 years after this publication and never her completed her book on the Ostrich Farms of Los Angeles. The map shows the area from Redwood Valley south to Petaluma then west to Mill Creek and east to Pope Valley with illustrations denoting such award-winning wineries as Parducci Korbel Charles Krug and Chateau Montelena along with more popular makers such as Mondavi Sutter Home and Berlinger. Chateau Montelena is most famous for its Chardonnay which won the white wine section of the "Judgement of Paris" wine competition. The verso includes a detailed table with winery information organized by county. Smith is remembered for her memoir Adobe Days chronicling her childhood on a sheep ranch in Rancho San Justo and her family's involvement in the development of Los Angeles. She was also a women's education advocate president of the Friday Morning Club and vice president of the American Association of University Women. <br /> <br /> <br /> Her earlier collections of California verse were printed by the Torch Press in Iowa. However this collection was printed by Jake Zeitlin Los Angeles bookseller two years after opening his first shop on Hope Street. A scarce piece of Southern California printing. . The cover graphic portrays a WW1 doughboy missing both his legs being carried into his home by a pair of mates. The interior text argues that the League of Nations at this time being actively opposed by the Republican majority in Congress was the only sure path to preventing a repeat of the horrors of the Great War. An interesting and fairly early attempt to mobilize the women's vote; equal suffrage had been granted in California in 1911. The contents comprise 56 photogravures documenting the entire lumbering process from stands of old-growth pine through felling milling and transportation.
