The Lykens Valley Railroad and Coal Company was incorporated in Pennsylvania in 1830; Thomas P. Cope was the first president. It ran from Millersburg to Williamstown and was the fourth in the United States and the first in Dauphin County to carry anthracite coal. By 1845 the line had to be regraded and relaid. It merged into the Penndel Co. in 1956. Written at the head of the front wrapper: "Preserve with Care." Very scarce. In Good- Condition: wrapper is lightly soiled; front wrapper is detached but present with closed 4-cm. tear from gutter edge; somewhat brittle with chipping at edges and separations at gutters; a few notations internally; otherwise clean. 185439066Appomattox: Privately printed 1854. 1854. VIRGINIA RAILROAD. 1 1/2" x 6 3/4" yellow paper stock printed one-side only in black and illustrated with an engraved train vignette. Ticket reads "Seat to City Point 1854." Unused printed ticket issued by the Appomattox Railroad Company for the short nine-mile ride between City Point Virginia now part of the city of Hopewell and Petersburg Virginia that would play a crucial role in the Civil War during the Siege of Petersburg in 1864-1865. Established in 1836 under the name City Point Rail Road it would be reorganized in 1847 as the Appomattox Railroad and later would be acquired by the Southside Railroad in 1854. Appropriately for the times the ticket had areas for "Mr." and "Seats" left blank for a passenger's name and seat to be filled with no dedicated "Ms" spot as unaccompanied Southern ladies did not take the train on their own. The New York and New Haven Railroad NY&NH was a railroad operating between New York City & New Haven Connecticut along the shore of Long Island Sound. In 1872 it merged with the Hartford and New Haven Railroad to form the New York New Haven and Hartford Railroad. It is now the Metro North Railroad New Haven Line making up a part of Amtrak's Northeast Corridor.<br /> <br /> With the subtitle "for the government and information of employes sic only.
