19029848London Waterlow and Sons Ltd c. 1902. CLR passenger map sheet size 14.5 x 33 cm printed in colours trivial spotting on verso guide-book issue with blank verso. Leboff and Demuth No Need to Ask p. 33 describe this as a new form of map which was to be commonplace until the 1930s. a street layout printed on paper and folded into four with travel information on the reverse side. As this is a guide-book issue the information on the verso has been omitted Passengers were requested not to smoke in the lifts and to refrain from spitting and sensible restrictions were placed on baggage banning heavy and bulky luggage which cannot be carried without inconvenience to Passgengers. However this Central London Railway map remains innovative for two reasons: firstly the CLR paved the way in giving maps away to passengers something which we now take for granted but which only became viable as printing became cheaper; secondly they also established a precdent for distributing quantities of their official map at no charge to commercial publishers to be bound into guide books. Presumably it was seen as free advertising and it became a standard practice for London Transport and its predeccessors in the first half of the 20th cnetury. Map unknown
19089216London c. 1908. Map postcard 9 x 14 cm printed in sepia divided back postally used with a franked green Edward VII halfpenny stamp. The date is difficult to decipher but may be July 8 1909. Sent to Mrs Beckham in Cheltenham by her daughter who says that she thinks her dad will like the card and describes a visit to the Wood Lane exhibition possibly the Imperial International Exhibition at the western terminus of the CLR. Dated to c. 1904 by Andrew Dow Telling the passenger where to get off 2005 p. 15 Wood Lane station was opened for the Franco-British Exhibition in 1908. The CLR produced a considerable quantity of advertising material in the Edwardian period. Other postcards included views of Lots Road Power station and rolling stock but of particular interest is the schematic map. Other lines are lightly sketched in using a conventional geographic format but the CLR is shown in bold and in a straight line which is a step towards diagrammatic presentation. Map unknown
19128845London: no printer stated 1912. CLR passenger map January 1912 edition 28.5 x 35 cm printed in colours text on the verso which includes places of interest connections and ticket information advertising the expected opening of the extension to Liverpool Street in June it opened in July; refolded and with left hand margin tabbed and trimmed for inclusion in a guide book. Similar in style to the UERL common design which had been in circulation since 1908 although with a chocolate rather than a green border. The UERL map gave all lines equal weighting regardless of who owned them to make it easier for passengers to use the network. The CLR on the other hand leaves the viewer in no doubt as to who made the map. Map [no printer stated] unknown
