The Chƒteau Frontenac was designed by American architect Bruce Price as one of a series of "chƒteau" style hotels built for the Canadian Pacific Railway company during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. CPR'S policy was to promote luxury tourism by appealing to wealthy travellers. First edition of this rare manual for mechanics and drivers working for the Hijaz railway printed in 1912 four years after the line had reached Medina and the year before a station was opened in Damascus. We have traced no institutional copies. An overview of the requirements for the selection of mechanics and drivers including minimum age character and competencies is followed by a description of duties responsibilities regulations about manoeuvres and various procedures to drive locomotives and trains in and out of depots. Chapters are also devoted to the use of signals train speed breaks the circulation of sole locomotives and various extraordinary circumstances such as the sudden incapacitation of the driver train breakdown and derailing. Octavo 180 x 110 mm. Text in French and Ottoman Turkish. Modern marbled paper boards gilt spine labels. Occasional pencilled pentrials. Corners a trifle rubbed spine slightly cockled contents toned minor traces of adhesive and original wrappers along gutter of title page and last verso couple of tiny stains to lower edge: a very good copy. hardcover

Bit of sporadic soiling but overall remarkably clean and attractive -- given it's printed on a thin tissue paper a rare survivor. Timetable "No. 4" which "Takes Effect Sunday May 7th 1882 at 12 o'clock Noon" and is meant "For the Government and Information of Employes only" containing two columns headed "Trains Going West" and "Trains Going East" showing all stops for both freight and passenger trains between Milwaukee and Madison Wisconsin. Signed in large type at the bottom by J.D. Layng as General Superintendent C.A. Swineford as Superintendent and Wm. F. Fitch as Assistant Superintendent. Rare to find in ANY condition given its inherent fragility much less this attractive condition. Newly and archivally framed under UV-filtering glass with a single archival cream matte and 3/4" thick dark wood and antiqued gold frame overall dimensions 18" X 12½" -- giving it a superb period feel. unknown
