194616398Washington D.C.: United States Hydrographic Office 1946. Arctic Ice Atlas Large folio 625 by 640mm index chart as front pastedown title preface signed by George S. Bryan Rear Admiral 86 full and half-page chromolithographed maps and charts divisional titles tables bibliography; original ring-bound pictorial blind-stamped black cloth binding gilt title. Arctic exploration reached new heights in the early twentieth century with the first successful expedition to the North Pole. Throughout the following decades countries started to claim territorial rights in the Artic for economic industrial and above all military reasons. In the Second World War the Arctic region became a key supply route for then-allies the United States and the USSR. Naturally its strategic importance only increased during the Cold War. In 1946 the US Navy published an atlas of the northern hemisphere documenting the extent of and changes to the ice formation across the Arctic. Coloured monthly maps for each principal region track seasonal changes and show permanent features. In the Arctic sea ice peaks in the early spring after the long cold winter with the most ice typically seen in March. The ice packs then partially melt and break up over the summer with September usually having the least sea ice. The majority of the maps are accompanied by scales and coloured keys to indicate different types of ice. They also show large swathes of the northern lands in the Northern Hemisphere where toponyms and significant geographical features are identified. The altas also includes statistical tables introductory notes and an extensive bibliography and reference list at the end. United States Hydrographic Office, hardcover
19140009024HMS FOX HMS PROSERPINE RED SEA INDIA EAST INDIES. Good. 1914. On offer is a detailed and eclectic book made by John Ring a Royal Marine Number 1520 during World War 1 on the H.M.S. Fox and H.M.S. Proserpine. The book contains journal entries of Rings time on the H.M.S. Fox in active duty and experiencing naval warfare. His entries are presented in a fairly matter-of-fact way with few sentence breaks. For example: H.M.S. Fox 9th June 1915. Join H.M.S. Fox at Ismailia on the 9th and stayed at at Ismailia from June 9th until the 1st of August and went from thier to the Great Bitter Lake and remained their until August 20th and then sailed for Suez and arrived in Suez on Aug 22nd and stayed their until Aug 31st and then left Suez for the Great Bitter Lake and remained their for a week and while we were their we captured two Turkish mines and kept them on board our ship for a night or two and about two mornings afterwards Sept 4 we towed them 4 Hundread miles from the Ship and about one hour after The Signal was made from our ship to press the Button and about two days later we found another Turkish mines and also did the same to that. For the rest of 1915 Ring is one the Fox as it patrols the area Suez Canal area from the canal to Port Said. From the Fox Ring moves to the H.M.S. Proserpine. On the Proserpine Ring does much of the same as he did on the Fox patrolling the Suez Canal rescuing ships that have run aground and occasionally coming into combat: The natives fired back to us and in their firing about the fourth round it was reported that the gunner was blown over and killed and another man had his arm blown off. The ship stays on the Shatt-al-Arab River for 4 months than leaves for India first docking at Bombay and then moving on to Colombo. While we were at Colombo we went to the Royal Naval Camp at Diyatalawa Ceylon and their are some interesting places to go at Ceylon about 200 years from the camp were were at was the Camp while the Boer War was on they sent the prisoners to Ceylon and another place was Little England. After this last diary entry the book takes on a less narrative identity. The rest of the journal consists of page after page of incredibly interesting and comprehensive lists of things concerning military casualties and other matters. The lists contain headings such as Norwegian Ships Sunk Enemys Lost Airships British Steamers Torpedoed and Sunk British Ships Sunk by German Raiders Soldiers Deaths in Quelling Rebellion concerning the 1916 Irish Rebellion commonly referred to as Easter Rising These are Marine Officers lost in the Battle he does not write it but he is referring to the Battle of Heligoland Bight the first naval battle of WW1 H.M.S. Ships Lost and Sunk in the Great War and many other lists of naval ships lost in the war usually containing the name of the ship the size in tonnage the date commissioned and/or destroyed and occasionally the crew size type of guns used and/or the name of the Captain. There are long lists of ships sunk from almost all the Allied Power countries. There are also news stories about the hanging of Sir Roger Casement the sinking of the Dreadnought Leonardo Da Vinci the H.M.S. King George VII and other stories related to the war copied down probably word for word from a newspaper. Though Ring was born in Essex the stories of Sir Roger Casement and the entry about the deaths in the Irish rebellion make it seem that Ring might have had some Irish sympathies or was possibly just interested in the Rebellion as a military matter. There are also about two dozen loose pieces of ephemera include with the book dealing with John Rings entire life and career the earliest dated 1896 and the latest 1955. Included are: A Naval Marriage Certificate of John Ring to Margaret Carr from 1920 on board the H.M.S. Hercules; 2 certificates of service detailing Rings entire military career from 1905-1932 with the earlier certificate showing a complete list of the ships Ring served on from 1905 to 1924 both certificates contain much personal information including Date and Location of Birth Religion Next of Kin and physical characteristics; many newspaper clippings concerning WW1 and WW2 with quite a few political cartoons as well. The book is in very good condition without any noticeable signs of wear and tear. For an unknown reason the cover reads O.R. Wace H.M.S. Swiftsure East Indies. Rings service record has no record of him stationed on the Swiftsure. The handwriting is clean and easy to read. It is 84 pages in length.; Manuscript; Folio - over 12" - 15" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF JOHN RING ROYAL MARINE MARINE NUMBER 1520 H.M.S FOX H.M.S. 19190001994ABOARD HMS TEMERAIRE HAIFA CONSTANTINOPLE ISTANBUL 1919. On offer is a super historically significant modest archive of seven 7 original manuscript letters dated Haifa Constantinople Istanbul January 19th 1919 through March 23rd 1919 handwritten by an officer of Royal Navy named Hal aboard the HMS Temeraire of the Eastern Mediterranean Fleet. Hal writes 32 full pages of fascinating content as the British Navy continued its new role post World War I of settling the Middle East. His narrative features an overland journey to Haifa a description of Acre in Israel description and commentary on the tenuous relations and allied efforts between Russians Turks Germans the English and the French in the aftermath of the Great War together with firsthand commentary on naval involvement movement of ships and much more. HMS Temeraire cruised the Black Sea navigated the Bosporus Straits to the Mediterranean during this three month period. Hal twice mentions Colonel Keyes the renowned Admiral who was involved in the Boxer Rebellion and heavily involved in the organisation of the Dardanelles Campaign of World War I. Of particular interest are his writings of the HMS Temeraire's role ferrying the famed General Sir Edmund H.H. Allenby who was associated with the Egyptian Expeditionary Force during the Sinai and Palestine Campaign from Palestine to Turkey. Here are some snippets of this fascinating significant archive: "We are now on our way to Haifa in Palestine to fetch Allenby & take him to Constantinople We left Sebastopol on Wednesday arrived at Constantinople on Thursday left on Friday & get to Haifa tomorrow afternoon. He is going on well but will probably take some time to get quite well. In the meantime Brookfield has put on a fourth stripe & is thoroughly enjoying himself as acting captain. He is very unfussy and quite undisturbed at any close work on the bridge which is very pleasant. Old Underbill used to get very nervous & consequently troublesome. Next day I went to a big lunch party at the local Minister for Foreign Affairs. There were six of us from the ship about an equal number of French officers from each of the two French ships several French soldiers & a balance of Russians. Some of the older Russ were the funniest looking old things in weird old uniforms if about Crimean War date. They the men not the uniforms looked very moth-eaten & dusty a little like wax works as if they had stood undusted in a museum for 50 years. The host was a funny little jew - his wife was a pleasant stoutish party 45-50 possibly a lady & talked French quite passibly. The lunch itself was amusing otherwise I was bored stiff. Quite an interesting day yesterday. It started by the commander going sick which left me practically Rear Admiral of the Black Sea. I was just getting interested in the job & had already given a destroyer her orders for a fortnight's cruise and interviewed a bunch of Russian trade pots who are bent on opening up trade with England from here & probably still more intent on making 500 per cent on the deal when the commander recovered & took the job over about lunch time. Last night three soldiers officers arrived in a destroyer from - two English & a Russian. I heard that one of them was a Col. Keyes he seems to have taken great pains to be wherever there was most fighting. He was with the Romanians in their big scrap with Croutie at Petrograd just before he was done in: at Moscow the only Englishman there I Believe. He was arrested several times and after escaping generally returned with forged passports to look for more trouble. They seem to think a lot of him both the Russians & his own lot.we left here on 4th with Allenby & his staff consisting of four generals & half a dozen other officers. I will send you some photos in due course He is a big man about 6ft 2 I should think & only looks 45 though he is 57. His staff seems to think a lot of him & say that he did the big battle entirely on his own against the advice of all of them & of course it was the big success of the war. We arrived at Constantinople on 7th left again with Allenby on 8th and got here on 11th. That night it blew a gale & made landing impossible next day - fortunately we got the General & staff landed first. We are now staying here until Monday 17th when we return to Constantinople. It is rather an attractive spot to look at. It is by Mt. Carmel 10 miles south east of Acre and 20 miles east of Nazareth Brookfield is still "captain" & thoroughly enjoys himself & liked having all the generals to entertain en route. He & I and the Fleet surgeon dined with the General last night. He & his staff are most pleasant & it was quite enjoyable. On Thursday evening about 9pm our cable parted & we shot down the Bosphorus at about four miles an hour. We got another anchor down & pulled up just short of the Sultan's harem. Only a few hundred yards more & the old Temeraire would have found herself in the main dormitory> The skipper in fact had just asked me the Turkish for "Don't be alarmed ladies the Sultan has just appointed me Lord of the Bedchamber" - the only excuse he could think of when the anchor held. But next day he thought it advisable to clear out as our cables are rather old for these games. So we spent the day at Haidas Pasha just outside the Bosphorus & camp on here yesterday. It is a nice country spot." Overall VG. Very Good. 24mo - over 5" - 5¾" tall. Manuscript. unknown
1779154781Spain: 1779. Visually appealing manuscript offering a valuable insight into the Spanish naval empire in the Caribbean Fascinating official service record of don Francisco Ximenez Parrado an officer of the Spanish Navy who served during the War of Jenkin's Ear 1739-48. This detailed account signed by Parrado enumerates his services from 1721 to 1779 listing naval campaigns many of them in the Americas. During his career Parrado participated in a range of operations; coastal patrols surveys and some significant naval engagements particularly against the British. In 1729 Parrado joined the Fuerte 60 under don Domingo Justiniani which sailed from Cadiz on 19 December in company with the two-decker frigate Nuestra Señora del Carmen 54. En route to Cartagena the two ships passed Tobago the coasts of Trinidad Margarita Cumana and Caracas. Once at Cartagena they commenced cruising the coasts of Terra Firme Spain's mainland possessions from the Caribbean to the Gulf of Mexico in search of illicit traders. In less than a year they had captured some six frigates and seven sloops carrying contraband off the coast of Venezuela. During the Summer of 1736 Parrado was in the Conquistador under don Blas de Lezo which was under repair in Spain before its embarkation for Cartagena early in 1737 with 1891 tons of cargo and brigadier don Jose Ambrosio the new governor of Chile aboard. The Conquistador remained at Cartagena on coast guard duties until she was scuttled by de Lezo during the battle of Cartagena in 1741 as part of the blockade of Vice-Admiral Edward Vernon's massive invasion assault. British failure here was to prove one of the pivotal moments of the War of Jenkins's Ear. Parrado is shown as having stayed in Cartagena until 1744 after which it seems he joined don Benito Antonio de Espinola in Havana taking part in the 1745 commissioning voyage of the Santa Teresa de Jesus 64 better known as the Dragon. The manuscript details an engagement in that year with an unnamed British vessel of 60 guns "quese avisto diferentes vezes frente del Puerto" "had been seen several times outside the port ". The Dragon's main mast was split and she was forced the quit the battle. The document also notes Parrado's presence in Tortuga Cabo de San Antonio Puerto Rico and Havana during 1746. The record details Parrada's career under four headings: Empleos "Employments" Campañas "Campaigns" outlined in chronological order Comiciones en que fue Empleado "Commissions in which he was employed" and Funciones en la America "Dutiess in America". Parrado seems to have occupied seven different positions during his career showing a clear ascent through the ranks ; Marinero Agregado a los Pilotos "Sailor attached to the pilots" Arnillero "Gunsmith" with a note that he continued in his role with the pilots Pilotín "Pilot's Assistant" Segundo Piloto "Second pilot" Primer Piloto "First pilot" Alférez de Navío "Frigate lieutenant" a junior watch officer and Teniente de Fragata "First lieutenant" a full lieutenant. Parrado later became the principal teacher at the School of Navigation in Cartagena. This fascinating document offers some welcome insight into a single career during a time of considerable conflict taking place on a world-wide stage. 4 pp. manuscript in neat clearly legible hand on a single bifolium elaborately engraved cartouche to the first page incorporating a three-master atop and enclosing a tabulated manuscript summary of Parrado's postings and positions. Light toning and minor staining. A very good example. Clowes The Royal Navy vol. 3. unknown

This text served to guide the transition of the Navy into a peacetime force after the War of 1812 laying out detailed instructions for various ranks and positions from yard personnel and warrant officers to high-ranking officials. It covers a wide array of topics including ship maintenance naval ceremonies discipline and provisions as well as specific instructions for surgeons pursers marines and midshipmen. The regulations also provided for the handling of convoys and established <strong>clear guidelines for salutes military honors and other ceremonies. This text played a crucial role</strong> in shaping the growth structure and discipline of the U.S. Navy during the early 19th century especially during the presidencies of James Monroe John Quincy Adams and Andrew Jackson.</p><p><strong>This particular copy belonged to the famous USS Peacock a sloop-of-war that played a significant role in the U.S. Navy during the early 19th century!</strong> Commissioned during the War of 1812 it was part of various naval operations including suppressing piracy in the Caribbean and patrolling South American waters during regional independence movements. After decommissioning in 1827 it was rebuilt for exploration and participated in the United States Exploring Expedition in 1838 eventually meeting its end on the Columbia Bar in 1841. The ship also took part in diplomatic missions such as conveying Francis Baylies to Argentina and engaging in treaty negotiations in Asia. Throughout its service the Peacock navigated various challenges including severe weather conditions and health crises among the crew. The fascinating post-war exploits of the USS Peacock's diplomatic and explorational missions are recorded in American diplomat Edmund Robert's notes that were published in 1837 under the title "<em>Embassy to the Eastern Courts of Cochin-China Siam and Muscat in the U.S. Sloop-of-war Peacock</em>".</p><p>Item number: #41562</p><p>Price: $2500</p><p>CROWNINSHIELD Benjamin Williams; BOARD OF NAVY COMMSIONERS OF THE UNITED STATES</p><p><strong><em>Rules Regulations and Instructions for the Naval Service of the United States: Prepared by the Board of Navy Commissioners of the United States with the Consent of the Honorable the Secretary of the Navy; In Obedience to an Act of Congress Passed Seventh February 1815 Entitled "An Act to Alter and Amend the Several Acts for Establishing a Navy Department by Adding Thereto a Board of Commissioners."</em></strong></p><p>Washington: E. 19390002008ABOARD THE HMS HERMES. Good. 1939. On offer is a sensational 1939 to 1940 manuscript relic of Britain's naval war with Germany at the immediate outset of World War II being an original diary handwritten by Captain G.P.D. Pease Royal Marine aboard the ill-fated HMS Hermes. The diary begins October 7th a mere month after the declarations of war between England and Germany 1939 with sporadic entries from October until mid-December and then another long entry in June of 1940 covering 19 folio sized 8" x 13" pages. Two later pages have damage as if glued pictures were removed with some small loss but not terrible. The ship arrives in Dakar French West Africa to cooperate with the French Navy in hunting German raiders which they then proceed to do. At one point he is invited to go up in an aircraft as an observer. Upon returning they slide across the deck and crash upside down in the sea below. He and the other two aboard were able to escape into a life raft and were rescued. He has a very long entry about this as well as a photo of them being rescued. The long June 1940 entry is interesting as it details the confusion as to what to do with the French Naval ships around them as they don't know what their allegiance is after the capitulation of the French government at that time and the establishment of the Vichy French government loyal to Germany. The Hermes was later sunk in action in 1942. Tucked in are two telegrams from the Admiralty announcing destruction of Graf Spee off Montevideo another regarding HMS Ajax ten Captain's remarks certificates all highly complimentary of his of his abilities dated 1940 - 1957 and his 1938 report card and successful passing to rank of Captain of the Royal Marines. Later he served on the HMS Superb St. Angelo and Implacable. Included are a few miscellaneous photos as well. Howgego III D4 Poore. AB . The Jeannette expedition 1879-81 was led by Lieutenant-Commander George Washington De Long 1844-81. The purpose was to find a route through the Bering Strait that was warmed by the Pacific Kiro Shio current to an open polar sea. The 'Jeannette' became icebound northwest 350 Km and sunk in May 1881 some 400 Km from the Siberian coast. The 33 men provisioned three life boats to drag over the ice to open water for the nearest settlements in Lena Delta. On the water they became separated in a gale and one boat vanished. George Melville's boat with 11 men landed in an eastern bay of the Delta and were able to reach a village to find help. De Long's boat with 14 men landed 100 km away on the northern part of the Delta and with winter coming they were not able to find shelter or game and all perished by the end of October 1881. They were found by Melville's rescue party in March 1882 and the bodies journals and artifacts returned to the United States.<br /> <br /> Part 1 of this book is the formal Navy inquiry requested by a joint resolution of Congress for a formal Naval Court of Inquiry on the Loss of the Jeannette which was conducted by the Navy in 1882-3. The 85 day inquiry generated the first compilation of documents and witness statements on the expedition. The Navy Court found no fault in the conduct of the officers or men and commended the actions of De Long and Melville. In Part 2 the Navy transmitted the report of Lieut. G. B. Harber on the search for the remains and artifacts of the De Long party and return the remains to the United States.<br /> <br /> In 1884 a separate House inquiry was called due to objections to the Court findings by survivors and survivor's families to members of Congress. The family of Jerome J. Collins reporter for the New York Herald assigned to participate in the expedition and died with De Long's party specifically objected to De Long treatment of Collins Melville's failure to rescue the lost party and the "cover-up" of failures by the Naval Court of Inquiry. The Inquiry detailed with the testimony of 20 witnesses 74 documents filed excerpts of the journals of De Long Ambler and Collins and much questioning by representatives of the Collins family and for Emma De Long and George Melville. There were no conclusions findings or recommendations to the Navy from this inquiry. Government Printing Office unknown
19470001114TENNESSEE NEW CALEDONIA GUADALCANAL SOUTH PACIFIC. Very Good. 1947. On offer is a sensational relic of World War II being a photographic diary with accompanying typescript journal commentary by an unidentified soldier from Tennessee. The Marine did a brilliant job putting together a handmade diary illustrated with two groups of photographs the kind you might have gotten in the PX during the War. Our sense is that the author has either returned to the area or hasn't yet left the arena of the War but soon after the War our author begins this charming retelling of experiences both good and terrible in the South Pacific. He uses twenty-five photographs and then details and stories relating to the people he was with or the scenes depicted in the photos. It is heartbreaking and heartwarming all at the same time. The soldier does not tell us his name but he makes references to being from Tennessee. He writes of taking a ship to New Caledonia and of people he worked with and situations he encountered. A great deal of his time was spent in Guadalcanal. In one moving passage he tells the story of his friend and mentor Howard H. Gabby Gould III; a soldier during World War I who reenlisted after Pearl Harbor. He became a drill sergeant and then made his way to New Caledonia. There he learned that he was considered unfit for overseas duty. Heartbreakingly Gabby dies of a broken heart 2 weeks after being shipped stateside. This is one of the most unique WWII relics we have come across. 186245043Washington: Government Printing Office 1862. 1862. CIVIL WAR. First edition. 8vo. Original blind stamped pebbled brown cloth 2 107 pp. titles stamped in gilt on the front cover plus two colored frontispiece plates and three folding maps. This copy is inscribed on the verso of the first frontispiece plate "Presented by Rear Admiral D.G. Farragut to Acting Master Chas. J. Gibbs." Gibbs served under Farragut on the steam-sloop Richmond and the inscription is almost certainly in Gibbs's own hand noting his receipt of the book from Farragut. Laid into this copy is a small albumen photograph of Farragut's flagship The Hartford with a number of men standing in the foreground. This volume collects a slew of official reports on the highly important Union Navy victories at the mouth of the Mississippi in April 1862 as Farragut captured key Confederate forts on his way to seizing New Orleans. More than two dozen reports from a variety of naval officers describe the six days of ferocious mortar bombardments and the rebel responses a display of firepower that historian James McPherson calls "the greatest fireworks display in American history." The operations that resulted in the capture of forts Jackson and St. Philip and the bombardment and surrender of New Orleans are described in detail. Other reports give casualty figures discuss the disposition of Confederate captives and relate coastal surveys. The plates show the Confederate ironclads Louisiana and Manassas partly submerged in water the latter vessel on fire "as she appeared in passing the 'Harriet Lane' after receiving a broadside from the 'Mississippi.'" The maps include a detailed view of the water and railroad approaches to New Orleans from the south; the Mississippi River below forts Jackson and St. Philip before Farragut's victory; and a plan of Fort Jackson. The well-executed maps and illustrations are all by the Bowen firm of Philadelphia. A volume desirable for its reports of a significant turning point in the Civil War the photograph of Farragut's flagship laid-in and the presentation from Farragut to one of his lieutenants. Expertly rebacked in matching cloth with title page and plates repaired along inner margin and small tears in the maps neatly mended with minor loss by a master paper conservator. Moderate foxing and staining throughout else a very good copy. Government Printing Office, 1862. hardcover

1816ABC_47973London 1816. 35 x 44. With an illustration of the plan of attack and a view of the fortifications on the Mole at Algiers. Contemporary hand coloured lithographed plate with the plan for the Bombardment of Algiers in August 1816. The attack was instigated and won by Great Britain and the Netherlands which was celebrated in London. The Bombardment of Algiers was part of a European campaign to end piracy against Europeans by North African countries. The goal of this attack was to free Christian slaves in Algeria and stop Omar Agha -1817 the of Dey of Algiers from enslaving more Europeans. The attack was partly successful. Algeria freed around 3000 Christian slaves after the battle but did not stop enslaving Europeans until later in the 19th century. The plan for the attack was made by Admiral Lord Exmouth the commander of the fleet. The largest ships approached the harbour in a column sailed to the zone were the Algerian guns could not reach them and bombarded the defences. Other ships blocked the harbour to attack the Algerian ships and prevent them from joining the battle. On the present illustration each of the British ships is named and drawn in its planned position thus giving an interesting visual insight into 19th-century naval tactics. The sheet is folded in half with a tear along the top and bottom of the fold somewhat browned and stained with remnants of tape on the back. The plan and view remain clear and the colouring remains bright. unknown
