118695Fifteen gelatin silver prints one 127 × 129 mm all others 134 × 139 mm slightly curled around the vertical axis; in uniformly fine condition Numbers pencilled on the verso of all but the small print include '/43' so we will suggest 1943 as the date. The only caption is a later one in ballpoint pen identifying Darling Harbour; there are another two featuring the same general area. Eight feature Garden Island prominently in all but one instance and four focus on Cockatoo Island; the former was a major naval base and the latter the main ship repair facility during the Second World War. Although the photographs are not credited given the nature of the images and the fact they were taken during wartime they were presumably taken with authorisation. Offered with the photographs is 'Sydney an Aerial Close-up' by Walter Brooks with photography by Neil Sutherland 1986; those familiar with Sydney in 2024 may derive some pleasure in drawing two comparisons . 16 items. unknown

118812Very Good. A gelatin silver print 216 × 166 mm lightly creased at the corner-tips; in excellent condition. The aircraft appear to be a Sopwith Camel and two Avro 504s specific models not determined. Offered with two other photographs of a biplane possibly a Sopwith Camel in the air: one is silhouetted above billowing sunlit clouds 147 × 199 mm printed without margins; the other is shown flying between clouds above hedgerows and fields 216 × 166 mm. We purchased these photographs with a small group of aerial photographs of Leighterton Aerodrome. <p>'By 1917 the Australian Flying Corps AFC consisted of four operational squadrons which outstripped the ability of the Army's Central Flying School at Point Cook to supply sufficient trained airmen. It was decided therefore to establish training squadrons within the AFC. Four such squadrons were subsequently established in the United Kingdom during 1917. 8 Squadron AFC was formed at Wendover on 24 October 1917. It was originally identified as 33 Australian Training Squadron Royal Flying Corps but was renamed along with all of the Australian squadrons in January 1918. The squadron relocated to Cirencester on 9 January 1918 and thence to Leighterton where it remained until disbanded in April 1919. The squadron's principal role was to prepare personnel for service with what was at first 71 Australian Squadron RFC and subsequently 4 Squadron AFC which was operating with British forces over the Western Front' Australian War Memorial website. 3 items. unknown

193074956Philadelphia: Pitcairn-Cierva Autogiro Company of America 1930. First edition a second edition was published 3 years later. Quarto 8 7/8 x 11 3/4 inches. 31 1 pp. with photographic illustrations on every page. Publisher's pictorial wrappers. Small stamp at head of from wrapper else a very good copy."Instead of a wing the autogiro had a large propeller on top. A second regular propeller drove it forward. But the big overhead propeller free-wheeled as the autogiro flew; it provided only lift. An autogiro could take off and land in a very short distance; but it couldn't rise vertically like a helicopter. If one lost power it spun safely back down to earth like a maple seed. It was developed by Spanish aerial pioneer Juan de la Cierva. Cierva and his brother began trying to build airplanes before WW-I while he was a civil-engineering student in Madrid. Juan de la Cierva built conventional airplanes for several years before he began thinking about the autogiro. Finally one night at the opera Aida he realized how to balance lift on advancing and retreating blades of that overhead propeller" J. Leihard. For some while there was a fantasy that everyone would own an autogiro and park it in their driveways. A year after this publication Amelia Earhart tried to be the first person to fly an autogiro coast to coast; she finally made it only to be told she had been beaten to the punch. In the late 1930s real helicopters came on the scene and that was in effect the end of the autogiro. Pitcairn-Cierva Autogiro Company of America unknown

With numerous photo illustrations text illustrations diagrams double-page centerfold colour illustration of the “EMCO†design Pilot-Plane in metallic silver black & red center crease fold dustsoiling edgewear minor thumbing small closed tear at lower fore-edge front cover still a VG- copy. First edition stated of this unusually scarce catalogue marketing the “only model plane†fitted with a rudimentary automatic pilot installed into the sailplane which featured an 84 in. wingspan. The prototype model had been tested at Van Cortlandt Park in The Bronx New York prior it’s division into six different park spaces by Robert Moses’s construction of the Henry Hudson Parkway and Mosholu Parkway. The fuselage was designed to be 45 in. long standing 16 in. climbing 500 feet per minute and designed to be dismantled into 6 different pieces and stowed in special case. Although the catalogue is vague on the “Automatic Pilot†it appears to have been some sort of early mechanical gyroscope possibly similar to the autopilot introduced by Sperry and Shiras in 1930 for the US Army Air Corps. Elton 1893-1966 was an aviation enthusiast and cartoonist who began as a sports cartoonist with the Philadelphia Record and Motion Picture Magazine and moved in 1916 to movie animation with Paramount-Bray Studio Cameragraph Film Co. and directed The Whozit Weekly cartoon series for Universal from 1918-1920 where both his sisters worked as silent film actresses. He continued as an animator and cartoonist publishing his “Jack Daw’s Adventures†cartoon strip and then was recruited about 1932-1933 by Walt Disney where he subsequently moved to California and spent the rest of his career until 1950 when he began manufacturing model airplanes again for Hobby Craft Supply Maufacturing in Burbank CA. Tear to one margin not affecting the text. <br/><br/><em>First appearnce of this pioneering paper in which Langley announced that it is possible with the motors that we now have to keep a plane in the air with large speed. In 1891 Langley experimented with steam-engine powered Aerodromes beginning the series which would lead to the human-carrying machine of 1903. The first of these was designated Aerodrome No. 0 and proved a failure. The second machine Aerodrome No. 1 was powered by a carbonic acid gas and later by compressed air. Aerodrome No. 2 also built in 1891 was also a disappointment. Aerodrome No. 3 1892 was of stronger construction and was modified a number of times. A better means of heating the steam was tested on Aerodrome No. 3 and was a decided improvement and was incorporated into Aerodrome No. 4. By the end of 1893 Aerodrome No. 4 was ready for testing and a launching device atop a house boat was built. </em> unknown
