191974295Jacksonville FL: John A. Coles Jr. 1919. Original panorama photograph of all the members of the four squadrons in front of a modified Curtiss J4. It measures 47 3/4 inches x 8 inches. Archivally matted. Excellent.Souther Field is the oldest continuously operating civilian airport in the United States that participated through military use on both World Wars. During WWI 500 cadets earned their wings here arriving 25 at a time and training for a period of two months. In 2009 it was renamed the Jimmy Carter Regional Airport. Perhaps the most famous aspect of this airport was its relation to hero aviator Charles Lindbergh. In April 1923 Charles Lindbergh arrived at South Field and purchased his first plane for $500 although he was not yet a pilot. His connection to aviation prior to this was that he was a "wing-walker" and a parachutist in an aerial circus. He bunked at the airport until his plane was finished after which he took his first solo flight and developed his piloting skills from flights out of Souther Field. After becoming proficient he departed for a life of barnstorming. Four years later in 1927 he became the first person to make a non-stop transatlantic flight cementing his status n the annal of aviation. John A. Coles, Jr. unknown

General Adolf Galland (1912-1996), one of Germany's leading fighter pilots of WWII, served as General der Jagdflieger (overall commander of the national fighter force) from 1941 to 1945. His combat career began in the Spanish Civil War during which he completed over 300 missions with Condor Legion. Throughout the Battle of Britain he served with III/JG26 against England and Northern France, and in 1942 devised the successul air protection of Operation CERBERUS, the famous 'Channel Dash' of the SCHARNHORST, GNEISENAU AND PRINZ EUGEN. Later in the same year he tested an early prototype of the Me262, the world's first operational jet fighter, before leaving combat to concentrate on the air defence of Germany against the RAF and USAAF bombing offensive. Increasingly critical of higher Nazi authority, he was relieved of his command following the 'Fighter Revolt' and returned to front-line duty with the elite Jagdverband in the Spring of 1945. He finished the war with 103 victories on over 700 missions and was awarded the Knight's Cross with Oakleaves, Swords and Diamonds, one of Germany's highest decorations. Galland's autobiography was first published as 'Die Ersten und die Letzen' in 1953 and is widely regarded as the most insightful and far-reaching account of WWII Axis air combat and one of the finest overall aviation memoirs of all time. VERY SCARCE. Enser, p.183.
8vo., First Edition, with portrait frontispiece and 17 plates on 12, some light offsetting from fold-ins to free endpapers, two small erasures on front paste-down, top and fore-edge lightly spotted; navy cloth, gilt back, a very good, bright, clean copy in unclipped dustwrapper, the latter lightly rubbed at extremities, chipped with minor loss (not affecting lettering) at head of backstrip, and with long closed tear across rear panel. The moving story of RAF Bomber Command's most famous squadron and arguably the most famous air exploit of WWII. The stirring 'Dam Busters March', written by Eric Coates as the theme to the movie, was almost immediately adopted as an official march of the Royal Air Force. Increasingly difficult to find in this condition. Enser, p.64; Mulholland & Jordan B121 (recording the first edition).
Single sheet, 8vo., a near fine copy. Signed simply 'Tedder' in the writer's usual manner, the letter is written to Geoffrey Moore, founder of the Buccaneers Cricket Club, and demonstrates the airman's keen and continuing interest in the sport. Tedder was President of Surrey County Cricket Club from 1953 to 1958. The letter regretfully declines Moore's invitation to attend the Buccaneer's annual dinner (held at Lords). Marshal of the RAF Arthur William Tedder, 1st Baron Tedder (1890-1967) was one of Britain's most distinguished air commanders. Educated at Whitgift School and Magdalene College, Cambridge, he transferred from the Dorsetshire Regiment to the Royal Flying Corps in 1916, serving in France from 1915- to 1917 and in Egypt from 1918 to 1919. He was then commissioned in to the (new) Royal Air Force where was appointed Director of Training from 1934 to 1936, after which he became Commander RAF Far Eastern Forces. During WWII he was head of RAF Middle East Command, controlling Allied air operations in the Mediterranean and North Africa, including the evacuation of Crete and the defeat of Rommel; his air power was a vital component of Montgomery's victory at El Alamein. Having been promoted to Air Marshal, Tedder then took part in the early planning for D-Day, and was subsequently appointed Deputy Supreme Commander Allied Forces Europe (the most senior such British position) immediately beneath General Eisenhower, on whose behalf he signed at the German Surrender in 1945. In 1947 he delivered the Lees Knowles lecture, afterwards published as 'Air Power in War'. Following his retirement he served as Chancellor of Cambridge University and Vice-Chairman of the Board of Governors of the BBC. Founded in 1930, The Buccaneers is one of the oldest and most famous 'wandering' clubs in English cricket (a 'wandering' club has no fixed home ground but plays consistently as an 'away' team relying on the hospitality of the 'home' clubs against which it competes). The Club's history has been written twice, by Clifford Bax in 1956 and more recently by Howard Spencer. ORIGINAL DOCUMENTS SIGNED BY TEDDER ARE EXTREMELY SCARCE.
197674691Reno: N.p. 1976-77. A marvelously diverse album of 284 original color and monochrome photographs of the many military and civilian aircraft in use between WWI and ca. 1976. Each photograph with extensive and knowledgeable annotations in a very neat hand. Original two-post stiff board binding one post lacking and replaced by wire; very serviceable. Silver sticker for the National Air Races in Reno. Some fading to a few of the color photos but none have fallen out or are damaged. A meticulous labor of love.Near the front of the album is an award of appreciation by the Tucson Detachment of the Marine Corps League to Patrick Levy-Galleguillos for donated a WWII F-4 Corsair. to the Pima County Air Museum. We can safely presume that this is the compiler of the album. There is also a ticket to the 13th Annual West Coast Fly-In Santa Cruz 1977 pasted to the inner from cover. This cataloger can not make much sense of most of the annotations but to a aviation buff we assume them to be helpful. Many of the photographs were taken at the National Championship Air Races held in Reno in 1976 but the compiler traveled far and wide in the years 1976-77 to take these photographs. Open Houses at Air Force Bases and Naval Air Stations museums airports airplane graveyards etc. He also took photographs of mounted aircraft the type you see in front of an aviation museum. Among the places he visited were Bakersfield. Fresno Van Nuys Half Moon Bay and Mojave CA; Reno and Sparks NV; many from Kingman AZ. N.p. unknown
