Prior to December 1935 and the nascent attempt by an airline consortium to open the first Airway Traffic Control Station pilots used visual cues maps compasses and radio communications to fly between airports. These directories which were continually updated with aerial photographs offered essential reference points for pilots navigators and now researchers as they captured architectural geographical and physical details visible beyond the edges of hundreds of airports.
