"Starting in the 1950s or before Bendix Pacific designed tested and manufactured hydraulic components and systems primarily for the military. In the same facility avionics and other electronic hardware was designed manufactured and documented in technical manuals. Much of this operation was relocated to a new facility in Sylmar CA where they had a large deep indoor pool for testing sonar. Telemetry components for the RIM-8 Talos surface-to-air missile included transmitters and oscillators in various frequency bands; the missile itself was designed and built by Bendix. They built and installed the telemetry system in all the ground stations for the first crewed space flights. For this program they developed the first cardio tachometer and respiration rate monitor system so that a ground-based physician could observe an astronaut's vital signs. MK46 torpedo electronics also came from this facility. Other diverse products included radar detectors in aircraft that identified ground missile tracking and ground missile launch at the aircraft. In the 1960s they produced an anti-lock brake system for military aircraft using established technology similar to Dunlop's earlier Maxaret. The technology is similar to the notched wheel and reluctor now used in cars. " from Wikipe . Scintilla Magneto Division unknown
115168The vintage gelatin silver photographs are in excellent condition; two are 130 × 180 mm taken on 22 July; one is 180 × 240 mm taken on 14 August. The large one is a slightly raking view of the village taken from a height of 400 metres; the substantial shell damage to virtually every building is clearly evident. The two smaller photographs are taken from a higher altitude and the extensive networks of trenches and numerous shell craters are the stand-out features. <p>From late June 1916 to early October 1916 Champneuville and other villages in the surrounding area were the scene of attacks and counter-attacks between the German and French forces. In late August 1916 the French recaptured Champneuville during the Second Offensive Battle of Verdun. 191840619New York: Y.M.C.A. Training School 1918. Octavo. Three ring notebook filled with unlined loose-leaf paper. Handwritten notes made by unknown author. Date on first notes paper is Sept. 7th - 1918. The student who kept this notebook included many drawings of implements and mechanical parts of airplanes. Also included in the notebook is "the Compound Nozzle Explained" a short 14 pages pamphlet from 1915. The student punched holes and added it to his course notes. The notebook covers two courses: Airplane Motors with Professor Hall and Plane School with Mr. Chedester. In the back of the notebook there is a bibliography a list of tools needed to apply for positions in an airplane factory and a long list of questions the student recorded to ask after lectures. Several clippings from magazines or other sources are included throughout. The student who kept this notebook would have been well prepared for a career in the U.S. Air Service or in a factory. According to the U.S. Labor Department Training Bulletin see below a graduate of the Y.M.C.A. Airplane Mechanics School could expect to earn between $35 and $50 per week to start up from $12 per week in nonessential industry. The training program lasted for 5 weeks 6 days per week. There was also a night program that lasted for 10 weeks. "The West Side Y.M.C.A. Airplane School was established in November 1917 with the object to supply a crying need for men with some knowledge of airplanes both in the Air Service and in the factories. At that time the Government made a call for 10000 airplane mechanics who were urgently needed for this service. In all probability there were less than 1500 mechanics in the whole country who had any experience with airplanes in the field. The Y.M.C.A. embarked upon an extensive advertising program using newspapers magazines and billboards. The results were most gratifying as the school has always had a waiting list regardless of the increased floor space and additional capacity. Inquire for more details. Y.M.C.A.
