El precoz Staunton, de doce años, hijo del secretario de la primera embajada británica en China, George Leonard Staunton, y su maestro de chino en el Collegio dei Cinesi de Nápoles, el jesuita Li Zibiao (Jacobus Ly), fueron los dos únicos intérpretes de chino en aquella importante legación. Su dominio del idioma propició que consiguiera el puesto de encargado de la East India Company en Guangzhou, y su traducción del código legal Quing es el primer libro vertido directamente del chino al inglés. La primera edición en español se imprimió en La Habana en 1862 en traducción de Francisco de la Escosura.
