8vo, cloth in dj. pp.304. addresses the historical relationship that has arisen between the concept of capitalism and the idea of China. Formulated by European intellectuals in order to identify the social formation in which they found themselves, capitalism was portrayed as unique to Europe and as an organic outgrowth of Western civilization. In this way, China was rejected as a model of civilization, and seen merely as despotic, feudal or stagnant. This Eurocentric judgement has hung over all subsequent thinking about China, even influencing Chinese perceptions of their own history. The aim of this collaborative project is to examine how the experience of capitalism as a European social formation and as a world-system has shaped knowledge of China. In addition the volume aims to establish new foundations on which a theory of Chinese society might be built, in order to perceive and understand Chinese development in less Eurocentric terms.

8vo, hardcover, 465pp. Ancient Greece and China Compared is a pioneering, methodologically sophisticated set of studies, bringing together scholars who all share the conviction that the sustained critical comparison and contrast between ancient societies can bring to light significant aspects of each that would be missed by focusing on just one of them. The topics tackled include key issues in philosophy and religion, in art and literature, in mathematics and the life sciences (including gender studies), in agriculture, city planning and institutions. The volume also analyses how to go about the task of comparing, including finding viable comparanda and avoiding the trap of interpreting one culture in terms appropriate only to another. The book is set to provide a model for future collaborative and interdisciplinary work exploring what is common between ancient civilisations, what is distinctive of particular ones, and what may help to account for the latter.

224 pages including index. One hundred and fifty years ago the British planter arriving in India or Ceylon could hardly expect a bungalow, a deep freeze, a television - let alone an orderly estate of tea bushes. The scene would rather be the dense tropical jungle, disease-carrying insects, and prowling beasts of prey. He would work and live alone, and bivouac for months on end under tropical rains with but the scantiest of provisions. That is why this book is entitled The Pioneers. Author, who was a planter in Ceylon, has done much research covering the pre 1900 period, putting together a description in words and pictures of how these pioneers lived. Amazingly, although a few books of personal reminiscences by planters have been published in the distant past, Weatherstone's achievement has never before been attempted.... To anyone who has lived in India, Ceylon, Imperial China - or indeed any tea producing country - this work will have a strong nostalgic appeal. To those in the tea and coffee trades - even to the keener drinkers - it is an education, an exciting view into a near-forgotten world. But to the thinning ranks of retired planters, it is simply a must." - from dust jacket. Nearly 350 illustrations in colour and black and white. Book clean, bright and unmarked with very light wear and minor lean to spine. Glossy green illustrated dust jacket remains attractive with very light wear and no tears. Excellent copy. Book
