"This is the only complete history of Tibet in English, a lucid and straightforward history of the country from its beginnings in the sixth century A.D., to the present day. As the official representative of the British and Indian governments at Lhasa for long periods between 1936 and 1950, Hugh Richardson writes from firsthand knowledge of Tibet and its people." Sir Hugh Richardson was well ahead of any Westerner on his day in his knowledge and understanding of Tibetan culture. Certainly he knew more than Tucci, Harrer and Govinda combined about the history of Tibet and its political institutions. 327 pp. incl. index and maps. ISBN: 0877732922

large 8vo, softcover. 313 pages. Numerous illustrations. End paper maps. "One hundred sites selected for the book range from a cave where Peking Man was discovered to architectural wonders built in the modern period. Gardens and temples, mausolea and palaces, bridges and pagodas are all included in this fascinating guide. The monuments have been chosen to show the development of Chinese art and architecture over the millenia, and to do so in a way that reflects both the dazzling variety of cultural influences -- the indigenous and the imported -- and the immense geographical scope of Chinese civilization. This guided tour takes the reader from the old Forbidden City (now the Palace Museum) in Beijing, the Great Wall at Badaling and the mausoleum of the Yellow Emperor in Shaanxi Province to Potala, the Tibetan palace of the Dalai Lamas, the tomb of Genghis Khan in Inner Mongolia and the Temple of Confucius in Taiwan". guida ai monumenti storici cinesi, in inglese

Fortune was the first plant collector to travel in China after the conclusion of the Opium War, as a botanical collector for the Horticultural Society of London starting in 1843. Travel was not allowed for more than 30 miles past Shanghai, but undaunted "he set off by boat from Shanghai, in Chinese costume complete with shaved head and pigtail" (see Coats p. 101-110 for details), and was the first westerner to reach Soochow and many other parts of China, collecting large numbers of plants and seeds. The book contains two chapters on the cultivation and manufacture of tea with suggestions on the possibilities of developing a tea industry in India, and contained new knowledge about the production and processing of tea. In fact, this book and his later books and plant collecting (as an employee of the East India Company) lead to the Indian tea industry. As a result of the travels described here he found numerous new plants including anemones, chrysanthemums, jasmine, forsythia, honeysuckle, etc. Besides plants and horticulture, the author also describes the people and geography. This was his first book. Cordier p. 2115. Massachusetts Horticultural Society Catalogue p. 102. This is a nice production reprinting the first edition, which is very scarce.
