1890164158Japan. 1890s. 46 albumen photographs some handcoloured 34 captioned with studio stock references approx. 20 x 25.5 cms on 23 gilt-edged leaves in an attractive pictorial lacquer album 27 x 26 cms spine renewed and hinges professionally secured some fading and spotting to the images and toning to the margins of the card leaves lacquer a little chipped the images in good condition.<P> Large album containing prints of professionally-taken images of Japan from the 1890s. The Images show the landscapes of Nagasaki Kobe HakoneYokohama Nikko and Lake Chuzenji street scenes in Tokyo Nagoya Castle views of Mt. Fuji from various angles images of Japanese junks and of women preparing dinner. <br>A number of these are well-known images by famous photographers of the day including "Fuji from Kashiwabara" by Enami Tamotsu who opened his photographic business in 1892 "Front of Fall Hakone" by Kajima Seibei 1866-1924 and "Mississipy Bay" a bay near Yokohama by Kusakabe Kimbei 1841-1932. Circa1919. 50 hand coloured full page collotypes printed on thick paper showing beautiful Japanese sights scenery and people involved in activities each plate captioned in English all edges gilt padded patterned silk over boards with tassel ties presented in a wrap around cloth covered case with toggle ties. Endpapers a little foxed with some occasional foxing on plates and cloth case. A good copy. 17.7 x 25cm. <br> <br>Inscribed to the President Messrs John Edmondson & Co Pty. Ltd. With the Compliments of the Goshi Kaisha Mato Denki Shokai Kobe Japan. John Edmondson & Co were suppliers of beaver and moleskin to the Victorian Government in the 1920s and it seems likely from this inscription were doing business with Japan during this period. . With identifying marks to verso. Near Fine. A photograph of the wedding party of the American missionary and author William Jackson Callahan and Martha Taylor Callahan taken at the Kwassui Girls’ School later Kwassui Women’s University in Nagasaki. At the time Taylor was representing the Women’s Board of the Methodist Episcopal Church and serving perhaps as principal of the school which had been started in 1879. Callahan began his work as a teacher in Japan shortly after graduating from Emory in 1890. The two would spend over forty-five years in Japan as missionaries. Ikuta unknown
1940221598Collaborationist-Controlled China or Japan. Circa1940. Small colour cartoon leaflet. Text in traditional Chinese characters. 10 x 15.5cm. Faint vertical crease though overall in very good condition. An insidiously light-hearted propaganda leaflet presumably distributed by Imperial Japan or Chinese collaborationists amidst the Second Sino-Japanese War. Its intent appears to be to discredit the regime of Chiang Kai-shek by associating him with British and by extension Western imperialism and the century of humiliation. The cartoon portrays an ailing Chinese patient suffering from a swollen Union Jack-emblazoned knee attended by two enthusiastic Japanese medics. <br> <br>The text at right reads: "把援蔣的綑帶解開來看! 非把這百年大患的惡瘤割掉 中國是不會再站起來的!" roughly translating to "Look! The fetters aiding Chiang must be broken! Unless the malignant tumor of this century-old great affliction is excised China will not be able to stand up again!". . unknown

Copperplate engraving on laid paper with generous margins 24 x 34 cms image; 38 x 49 cms sheet original central fold the sheet has been been previously folded presumably for framing at four sides to reduce the margin with short tears at the left fold not affecting the image the sheet a little age-toned and edges ragged but the image a fine dark impression in very good condition. An early edition of the plate which appeared in Arnoldus Montanus' "Gedenkwaerdige gesantschappen der Oost-Indische Maetschappy in't Vereenigde Nederland aen de kaisaren van Japan." published by Jacob Meurs in 1669. Montanus based his work on journals from the Dutch East India Company Embassy of 1649.
