Passengers were feted with gourmet meals on bone china with silver cutlery. After surviving a Typhoon the pair experience the Tai-Ping Rebellion and travel to Shanghai Peking the Great Wall of China Hong Kong Canton and beyond. Two concertina-bound autograph books. <br> <br>Fan-shaped concertina-bound autograph book 13 x 20cm widest point 30 thick cream leaves with approx 160 manuscript autographs gilt-flecked endpapers gold-patterned brocade cover with a linen label all edges gilt enclosed in a linen fan-shaped sleeve with toggle closures and paper label binder's stamp to the inside cover; the linen worn and faded and the album split at two openings but in very good condition. <br> <br>Small concertina-bound autograph book 12 x 9cm approx 25 thick paper leaves 5 red temple stamps and 4 pencilled autographs sable silk-covered boards chipped paper label in very good condition. Two autograph books dating from 1933-1940 which belonged to the Australian Japan expert author and broadcaster George Caiger 1903-1991. In 1930 after teaching in England and Australia Caiger moved to Japan where he taught English at Musashi Koto Gakko a private school in Tokyo and later also lectured at the Peers' School in Tokyo. Caiger wrote numerous essays and books on Japan and developed friendships with some leading figures in Japanese society and politics. He returned to Australia in 1940 and later became an intelligence officer and translator for the Australian military during World War II before joining the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. <br> <br>His beautiful fan-shaped Japanese autograph book contains a collection of signatures messages and some ink sketches. The earliest of these date to 1933-1934 and include farewell messages from friends written in May 1934 when Caiger and his wife Margaret returned for a short period to Australia. Others date from 1939-1940 and include farewells from the time when the Caigers left Japan for good in late 1939. An interesting set of signatures on the last page includes the annotation "SS Atuta Maru 00.01am 1st January 1940 Arafura Sea" clearly written as passengers celebrated a rather uncertain New Year on their voyage home from Japan. There are also two charming ink sketches - one of Mt. Fuji - drawn by a friend named Y. Nakatsuka shortly before the Caigers' departure from Japan. Autographs include those of Australian diplomat H. R. Sawbridge and Christian missionary Clarence Gillett who later worked with Japanese internees in the US during WWII. <br> <br>A second smaller concertina-folded autograph book is mostly blank but contains a few pencilled-in names on the first page and some souvenir ink-stamps including one labelled "Daibustu Nara 1.1.33" in the rear. <br> <br>Fascinating autograph realia from the Imperial Japanese period collected by a well-known Australian broadcaster. . hardcover

Porcelain ash tray illustrated with a colour map 12 x 13cm with accompanying folded newpaper sheet map black and white photographic illustrations 4pp. 54.5 x 39cm A striking pair of items reflecting Japan’s aviation ambitions on the eve of the Pacific War. <br> <br>By the late 1930s Japan had developed advanced aircraft capable of long-distance flight achievements that were widely celebrated and closely followed by the press. The globe-shaped ashtray commemorates the highly publicised 1937 Tokyo–London flight of the modified military aircraft Kamikaze sponsored by Asahi Shimbun. The flight captured the public imagination and was reported as a major national success. <br> <br>The ashtray is attractively decorated with an image of the aircraft together with its route from Japan to Britain and the precisely recorded flying time of 94 hours 17 minutes and 56 seconds. <br> <br>In response the rival Mainichi Shimbun sponsored an even more ambitious venture: a round-the-world flight by the aircraft Nippon. The accompanying four-page newspaper supplement promotes the undertaking with photographic illustrations including a dramatic front-page image of the aircraft flying over Mount Fuji and a detailed projected route map. Period advertisements featuring Western military aircraft add further visual and historical interest. <br> <br>Thenewspaper conveys a clear sense of competitive ambition expressing the hope that this flight would surpass earlier records. With a crew of seven Nippon completed its journey in approximately two months. However the outbreak of World War II in Europe shortly after departure forced the cancellation of planned stops in London and Paris although Berlin and Rome were successfully visited. <br> <br>Together these pieces offer a vivid insight into the intersection of aviation media rivalry and national aspiration in late 1930s Japan. . Aichi-ken Nagoya Shihongakko Teacher's College n.d. 1870's An interesting little elementary school reader from the first series of textbooks designed and created by the Teachers College Normal School system in Japan after the Meiji restoration to introduce "Western Learning" to the country. What follows is a series of excerpts from an informative article found online at http://wwwwp.mext.go.jp/hakusyo/book/hpbz198103/hpbz198103_2_035.html "The Normal School which was under the direct jurisdiction of the Department of Education was also requested to compile elementary school textbooks on the basis of its practical experience. Also an office for editing elementary school textbooks was set up in the Normal School in December 1872. The Department of Education encouraged independent prefectures to reprint the textbooks and other educational material which it and the Normal School had compiled and it was not long before most of the prefectures adopted this practice and the reprinted textbooks were in nationwide use. Especially following the establishment of regulations for the course of study for elementary schools by the Normal School the textbooks prepared by this institute gained wide acceptance. These textbooks included elementary school readers introductory geography outlines of Japanese topography outlines of world topography outlines of Japanese history outlines of world history elementary school arithmetic etc. .The elementary school textbooks proved to be an interesting introduction of the new knowledge based on the Civilization and Enlightenment Bunmeikaika thought and they were accepted not only as textbooks but also as popular reading material for the public at large. Thus their influence was of considerable importance in the dissemination of the new culture." It is pretty clear that the introduction of Western culture also entailed the introduction of a least a variety of baseball in the 1870's as well a fact confirmed by other sources on the origins of baseball in Japan. The American educational consultants and their Japanese colleagues in Aichi saw fit to include a cut and a story with a group of boys playing with bats and balls pitching and hitting - interesting proof that baseball is nearly as old in Japan as it is in the States. Original coloured pictorial wrappers chipped with a little loss on spines some staining around staples good copies. A series of biographies of famous figures in world history aimed at a Japanese juvenile audience. These illustrated volumes are biographies of Demosthenes no 2 of the series Hannibal no. 5 Garibaldi no. 11 President Garfield no. 19 General Grant no. 29 and King Charles XII of Sweden no. 34. The books by Japanese authors give an interesting insight into the European and American figures who were regarded as historically significant and as moral exemplars in the Meiji Era. The series was published at a time when Japanese education was still strongly influenced by western models although a new wave of more nationalist education was just beginning to take hold. President James Garfield for example is rather surprisingly perhaps described as having been not merely a US President but also one of the great figures of modern times 'in terms of his opinions an ideal hero of civilization'. Reflecting the intended audience this and some other works in the series devote a lot of space to the childhood and early lives of their subjects emphasising their diligence hard work idealism and patriotism. . 1905227961905. A series of national flags designed to be decoration for a patriotic event. The flags included are those for Japan the Imperial Japanese Navy Great Britain Denmark Turkey and the US flag with 30 stars. Many are not identifiable. What seems to be an early iteration of the Brazilian flag including the words "Ordem I Proesso" sic across a blue globe with constellations within a diamond shape. Nicely preserved in pristine condition within the original box which is decorated with Japanese children waving the string of flags. The box flattened missing one edge otherwise in very nice condition. unknown

The covers and the twelve double-page spreads within are printed after work by several important artists and illustrators including Takei himself. This is volume 7 of the "Standard Picture Books for Children" series its title could be translated as MADAM SUN AND MISTRESS MOON. It has a series of fifteen charming depictions of the influence and necessity of the sun and moon on our daily lives. No sign of the Imperial sun worship of the time save an explicit pictorial juxtaposition of the ancient Egyptians and modern Japanese worshipping the sun. The moon comes in to the picture at the very end as a guide for children on dark streets at night. The text is by Takei. The covers are a bit rubbed and slightly stained and soiled but overall a good copy of this extremely ephemeral publication. unknown

Facsimile edition of this 19th-century account of when Sir James Bruce Earl of Elgin became High Commissioner to China and traveled to Asia to end the Second Opium War by signing the Treaties of Tianjin. Later he ordered the destruction of the Old Summer Palace outside Beijing in retaliation for the imprisonment torture and execution of 20 European and Indian prisoners. The surrender documents included ceding Hong Kong and part of the Kowloon Peninsula to Great Britain. He also signed a treaty of Commerce with Japan in between the trips. Oxford Univ. He is tasked to 'write a report on the Sino Japanese Shantung Negotiations.' "and that is as complex as possible and they seem to be getting nowhere."<br /> <br /> He mentions meetings with Edwin Denby Secretary of the Navy as the Minister's special representative entertaining Major General Wright Mr. Warren and Du Wellington Koo the Chinese Minister to Washington then Foreign Minister and Finance Minister. "Du Wellington Koo has been entertained right and left and I have gone to most of the dinners for him - she is one of the prettiest Chinese I have seen." referring to his wife Hui-lan Oei<br /> <br /> The Sino-Japan Shantung Negotiations referred to the treaty between China and Japan settling the dispute over the Shantung Peninsula and its valuable resources including the Shantung Railroad and its connection to the Trans-Siberian Railway. Japan had taken over occupancy after pushing out Germany the original leaseholder. The dispute was mediated by the United States and ultimately the leasehold was returned to China.<br /> <br /> Bub's sister Jeannie wrote him from The Colony Club in New York City regarding Philip's and presumably Papa's trip to Italy. He also mentions the visit of a mutual friend Roger Gratwick and his own intention of returning to the States next Spring. There are several penned annotations dates &c on this map indicating useful notes to "Matthews" am American civilian worker in Japan. . On the index page are several notes red lines & details as to the status of the hotels officer vs. enlisted and costs of breakfast lunch & dinner. Room rates were from $1.50-$3.50. . Engravings of Dejima as an island in 1858 and a Buddhist temple in Nagasaki which appeared in The Illustrated London News in the year the Dutch East India Company's outpost at Dejima was finally abolished following the signing of the Treaty of Kanagawa between Japan and the United States four years earlier. . A series of 8 pen and ink drawings 5 coloured 1 also highlighted in gold drawn from Chinese books possibly the 14th-century Sanguo yanyi or Romance of the Three Kingdoms. All mounted on European paper 6 on 3 different patterns of decorated paper. The paper of the drawings ranges from 23.5 x 14 cm to 24 x 15 cm. They show the following outdoor and indoor scenes:1 2 warriors on horseback one of whom has just beheaded the other and carries his head away the beheaded warrior has not yet fallen from his horse while his superior watches on horseback with 2 attendants.2 a man standing with a spear in the prow of a boat while 2 men and a woman sit at a tea table in the boat which flies a flag and pennant.3 5 people on 2 boats one flying a flag and pennant.4 4 soldiers bringing a woman to a dignitary at his house.5 a delegation visiting a dignitary.6 2 men playing go with 4 attendants and a guard.7 a dignitary at a writing table with attendants and visitors.8 a seated dignitary with 6 standing figures 1 with a document at a table.In the backing paper of number 7 one can make out an Amsterdam coat of arms watermark. It is difficult to see clearly but seems to follow the general style of Laurentius 71-95 1662-1675. The 3 patterns of decorated backing paper show: a flower pattern printed in gold on green; 2 patterns with more abstract decorations in a diamond pattern printed in gold on white.With this series we include a watercolour drawing and a woodblock print:9 watercolour drawing of irises along a stream with hills in the background 17 x 22.5 cm.10 rectangular woodblock print of a Samurai at a tea ceremony 14 x 10 cm possibly derived from a Japanese book.Some edges of the drawings a little frayed but otherwise in very good condition. unknown

A fascinating insight into an Australian visitor's experiences during his visit to Japan for the 1970 World Exposition held in Osaka. Expo '70 was the first World Exposition held outside Euro-America and set new records in the number of participating countries and visitors.
