L'autrice presenta un mondo culinario fortemente caratterizzato, volgendo uno sguardo attento ai vari lessici gustativi, al legame stabilito con gli altri sensi, alle modalità con cui i consumatori si rapportano con il cibo e, attraverso di esso, con la società in generale nel corso dei secoli. Il libro analizza il piacere che deriva dal cibo a chi lo guarda nei film, ne legge in poesie e romanzi, lo consuma dentro e fuori dal video e, talora, vi cerca un incontro con l'Altro, come nel caso della cucina italiana in territorio coreano. Viene descritta la ricca e complessa simbologia degli alimenti nei rituali popolari e non mancano, infine, cenni alla funzione e al significato del cibo sulle tavole degli incontri politici, fondamentale terreno di negoziazioni nelle relazioni internazionali.
