Mit einer großformatigen, mehrfach gefalteten Karte im Format 61 x 50 cm, zwei ganzseitigen Bildtafeln in Stahlstich sowie gestochenem Porträt des Verfassers als Frontispiz. Der britische Marineoffizier John Ross (1777 - 1856), von 1812 an im Range eines Commanders, wurde 1818 mit dem Kommando einer Expedition zur Suche nach der Nordwestpassage betraut, in deren Verlauf er in dem von ihm entdeckten grönländischen Thulebezirk zum ersten Mal in der Geschichte der westlichen Zivilisation Kontakt zu den Polareskimos aufnehmen konnte. Eine weitere 1829 mit einem Dampfschiff unternommene, von Ross privat organisierte und auch mit Privatmitteln finanzierten Expedition in die Nordpolregion blieb im Packeis stecken, wodurch die Crew zur viermaligen Überwinterung in der Eisregion gezungen wurde, bevor ihre Rettung durch den Walfänger Isabella erfolgte. Die überaus seltene Promotionsarbeit des bedeutenden österreichischen Afrika-Forschers Oscar Baumann (1864-1899). Seine gründlichen Aufnahmen über die Besteigung des Durmitors, während einer Reise durch Montenegro im Jahr 1883, bewegten Oskar Lenz, der 1885 die österreichisch-ungarische Kongo-Expedition vorbereitete, ihn einzuladen, die Expedition als Topograph zu begleiten. B. erkrankte jedoch nahe Stanley Falls, und wurde in einem Lager zurückgelassen, wo er während seines Aufenthaltes die Swahili-Sprache erlernte. Seine Rekonvaleszenz verbrachte er auf der Insel Fernando Póo, von deren Hauptstadt aus er eine zweimonatige Rundreise antrat und mit seinen Beobachtungen wertvolle Beiträge zur Kenntnis der Insel und ihrer Bewohner, der Bube, von deren Sprache er zwei Vokabularien zusammenstellte, lieferte. - 1887 promovierte B. in Leipzig mit dem 'Versuch einer Monographie von Fernando Póo', einer Vorarbeit zu vorliegendem Werk. In dem angebundenen Werk beschreibt B. eine Reise, die ihn als Begleiter des deutschen Forschungsreisenden Hans Meyer 1888 nach Ostafrika führte, um den Kilimandscharo zu bezwingen. Die Expedition durchquerte - von der Ostküste ausgehend - die damals noch völlig unbekannte Gebirgslandschaft zwischen den Flüssen Pangani und Umba. Wegen an der Küste ausgebrochener Araber-Unruhen sahen sie sich am südlichen Pare-Gebirge zur Umkehr gezwungen. Das Ergebnis dieser Expedition war die erste topographische Aufnahme von Usambra. Seine kartografischen und ethnologischen Aufzeichnungen waren für die schnell folgende wirtschaftliche Erschließung des Landes von unschätzbarem Wert. Title-wrappers stab-sewn as issued; a few uncut edges a little foxed; an excellent pair. Victorian Parliamentary Papers Number 108 and 109 of 1861-2. The expedition was 'for the purpose of rendering relief if possible to the missing explorers under the command of Mr Burke; and directing the movements of the two land parties organized and despatched on the same mission of humanity from Brisbane and Rockhampton' under Landsborough and Walker respectively. Paper 109 gives Norman's account of the activities of his own party; Paper 108 in spite of its prosaic title is almost exclusively devoted to detailed accounts by Landsborough 33 pages and Walker 16 pages. Landsborough's reports include an account of the voyage and wreck of the hired transport 'Firefly'; two on the Albert River and the surrounding country and the journal of his south-western expedition 20 pages. Walker's reports include the journal of his expedition from Rockhampton to the Albert River 12 pages; its first and only publication. Three maps are referred to in the list of contents of Paper 108; these maps are rarely seen and were apparently issued only in copies made available to Victorian Members of Parliament. 2 items. First edition.<br /><br />French Guiana French: Guyane française officially Guyane is an overseas department French: département d'outre-mer or DOM of France located on the northern coast of South America. It has borders with two nations Brazil and Suriname. Like the other DOMs French Guiana is also an overseas region of France one of the 26 regions of France. Its currency is the euro. The prefecture is Cayenne. The addition of the adjective "French" comes from colonial times when three such colonies existed: British Guiana now Guyana Dutch Guiana now Suriname and French Guiana. The three are still often collectively referred to as the Guianas. French Guiana was originally inhabited by a number of indigenous American people. It was settled by the French during the 17th century. After the Treaty of Paris in 1763 Louis XV sent 12000 settlers to French Guiana to colonise the region. One and a half years later only a few hundred survived.2 Its infamous Île du Diable Devil's Island was the site of penal settlements from 1852 until 1951. More than 70000 French convicts were deported to French Guiana between 1852 and 1939.3 In 1809 a Portuguese-British naval squadron took French Guiana for the Portuguese Empire. With the signing of the Treaty of Paris in 1814 the region was handed back to the French though a Portuguese presence remained until 1817.
