Sergeant Patrick Gass was one of the few members of the Lewis and Clark expedition to keep a continuous log of the entire epic journey. His simple and direct writing style along with his emphasis on the daily activities of the trip made Gass's journal more accessible to the general reader than other firsthand accounts and revealed the optimistic spirit of the expedition. In this new edition Carol MacGregor's thorough annotation of the journal and the inclusion of Gass's recently discovered personal account ledger lend new insight into the life and work of PatrIck Gass. The Journals of Patrick Gass represents a significant contribution to the study of the Lewis and Clark expedition essential for everyone interested in the history of Western expansion.
Mountain Press Publishing Company, hardcover

Edited by John Bockstoce. Works issued by the Hakluyt Society second series volume 169 and 170. First edition.

In 1845 Sir John Franklin's expedition left England search for a northwest passage and vanished into the Arctic forever. three years later HMS Plover's was the first departure in twenty one expeditions searching for Franklin. Although most of the analyses of the Franklin search have focused on the large expeditions in the eastern Arctic the smaller western expeditions also produced significant geographical and ethnographic information. The Plover's voyage of 1848 to 1854 was the first constant presence of Europeans in the western Arctic and Rochfort Maguire's journal is the earliest account of a sustained foreign association with the Eskimos of northern Alaska. Maguire's journal is far more than an important historical document; it is a fascinating account of Europeans and Eskimos learning to cope with one another. Maguire's narrative is introduced by a detailed discussion of the history strategy and logistics of the Franklin Search in the western Arctic.

Condition:

A fine copy in like jacket.
Hakluyt Society hardcover

ABOUT THIS BOOK: In 1498 a young captain sailed from Portugal circumnavigated Africa crossed the Indian Ocean and discovered the sea route to the Indies opening up access to the fabled wealth of the East. It was the longest voyage known to history; the ships were pushed to their limits their crews were racked by storms and devastated by disease. However the greatest enemy was neither nature nor the fear of venturing into unknown worlds. With blood-red Crusader crosses emblazoned on their sails the explorers arrived in the heart of the Muslim East at a time when the old hostilities between Christianity and Islam had intensified. In two voyages that spanned six years Vasco da Gama would fight a running sea battle that would ultimately change the fate of three continents. The Last Crusade is an epic tale of spies intrigue and treachery; of bravado brinkmanship and confused - often comical collisions - between cultures encountering one another for the first time. With the world once again tipping back East The Last Crusade offers a key to understanding age-old religious and cultural rivalries resurgent today. Quantity Available: 1.
