He would refuse to take provisions and live off the land became famous for his daring exploits. "In 1926 Hornby tried to spend a year in a spot by the Thelon River with his 18-year-old cousin Edgar Christian and another young man Harold Adlard. Unfortunately the trio missed the caribou migration southward and therefore lacked sufficient food to survive the winter. Hornby died of starvation along with his companions in 1927. The graves of the three men can be found by the Thelon River near Hornby Point.Hornby recommended in a report following his expedition with Critchell Bullock that the areas near the Thelon and Hanbury Rivers be created as a wildlife sanctuary. Gass is best remembered for his participation in the Lewis and Clark expedition. He was the expedition's last surviving member when he died at the age of 99 in 1870. He was important to the expedition because of his service as a carpenter and he published the first journal of the expedition in 1807 seven years before the first publication based on Lewis and Clark's journals. This is the Account of the First Expedition of Don Diego De Vargas Into New Mexico in 1692. This is the first modern printing and contains a facsimile of the "Noticia de la Recuperacion." Translated by Irving A Leonard. Publications of the Quivira Society volume III. Number 628 of the limited edition of six hundred sixty-five copies.<br /><br />Sigüenza was born in Mexico City in 1645 the youngest of eight siblings. He was related to the famous baroque poet Luis de Góngora. He studied mathematics and astronomy under the direction of his father a Peninsular who had been a tutor for the royal family in Spain. Sigüenza entered the Society of Jesus as a novice August 17 1660 took simple vows August 15 1662 at Tepotzotlán and left the society or was expelled in 1667 or 1669. On July 20 1672 he was named to the chair of mathematics and exact sciences at the University of Mexico and was ordained a priest the following year. He was chaplain of the Hospital del Amor de Dios now Academia de San Carlos from 1682 until his death. He was well-known in the colony as a man of science. He was also a poet non-fiction writer historian philosopher cartographer and cosmographer. Such was his prestige that the French King Louis XIV tried to induce him to come to Paris. He published his first poem in 1662. In 1671 he published an almanac. In 1693 he published El Mercurio Volante the first newspaper in New Spain. At the hospital he became a close friend of Juan de Alva Ixtlilxochitl who put at his disposal a rich collection of documents of his ancestors who included the historian Fernando de Alva Cortés Ixtlilxochitl and the kings of Texcoco. In 1668 Sigüenza began the study of Aztec history and Toltec writing. On the death of Ixtlilxochitl he inherited the collection of documents and devoted the later years of his life to the continuous study of Mexican history.<br /><br />Condition:<br /><br />Some darkening to and slight staining to spine else a very good copy. Report to the Admiralty of the expedition that left Upernivick on 22 July 1875 and returning in October 1876. This is an ex-library copy with flaws as described. Black half-leather binding with banded spine and dark blue covers are lightly rubbed at edges binding is sound with strengthened inner hinges. Crossed and stamped large library label is pasted to the inside of the front cover additional end-papers darkened no half-title-page frontis map has been pasted to previous end-paper with resultant wrinkles on both surfaces and a stamp of "Free Public Library Westminster S.W." on the obverse of the frontis shows through the pasted end-paper although not visible from the map. Title-page is darkened has a crossed out reference number in the upper leading corner and a psted paper rectangle covering a "Free Public Library Westminster S.W." stamp small feint stamp on reverse and short closed tear approx 1cm on leading edge. Pages are little darkened with some smudge marks mainly in margins page 84 to 91have a very small ink mark on the lower corner "Free Public Library Westminster S.W." stamp acorss the bottom of the final page. Alf Gregory Greg1913-2010 was an accomplished mountaineer and keen amateur photographer who took on the role of stills camera as part of his climbing duties on the successful 1953 Everest expedition. This resulting work was allegedly the first all colour photographic book published in Britain at that time and contains the earliest appearance of many of his fine images.
