This unsuccessful joint attempt on the south west face and west ridge ended in controversy following the death of Indian Harsh Bahugana much illness and bitter divides between team members which resulted in the mass departure of several climbers including the leader Norman Dyhrenfurth see Mountain 17 Sept 1971 and Peter Steele's book 'Doctor on Everest'. "Petermann's Mittheilungen" became the leading geographic publication of the world and remained so until World War I. All the new geographical discoveries all the reports from the latest exploratory expeditions were published and flowed into Petermann's Geographische Anstalt and he took care to see that it was translated into cartographic form as quickly as possible. The maps soon came to have a reputation for containing the latest and the most accurate information available.
